I have read where the server has trouble extracting the XML file from the .cab file. I have been able to resolve this issue in two different ways.
One, in the console go to "Configuration > Patch Global Configuration." Select the "Shavlik URL Configuration" tab. Edit each line by replacing the URL syntax .cab with .xml. Hit the Save icon within the configuration window (not the normal Save icon at the top left hand side.
Try to update the patch catalog. If that fails you will have to go to the folder where the two .cab files are located. Extract them both to the same location (they only contain .xml files). Once both XML files are extracted, delete both .cab files. Try to update your patch catalog again.
After Making the Modifications to Patch Global Configuration -->Shavlik URL
I tried to update the Catalogue
and received the following error
Error Mar 20, 2012 12:25:18 PM Fatal error while updating metadata : null
Can you post the whole stack trace?
Also what version of bbsa are you on, and SP
Did you resolve your issue Preetha? If so, what was the solution? If you mark the answer people can research our Communities for solutions in the future.
Sorry for the delay in responding. The followign is the stack trace

I was not able to find the file on FTP server as mentioned on that Discussion.
Preetha, those files are located on your File Server. Look in:
You will see folders for each Patch Catalog you create named "catalog_number"
If you have existing Patch Catalogs, you will need to go into each folder and extract the XML files contained in the hfnetchk6b.cab and pd5.cab files. After extracting the XML files within the folder, delete the .cab files. Then try to update your catalogs.
As a test, you can also create a new Patch Catalog with a single filter like "Internet Explorer" and attempt to update it. Does that work?
It did create the Folders butit is also getting deleted after sometime. I am still receiveing the same kind of an error.

Preetha, to the best of my knowledge, the issue is your server is having difficulty extracting the XML file from the CAB file. Read the error message you posted.
Either you didn't make the change in "Configuration > Patch Global Configuration" or you have CAB files in your catalog directory on the file server that still exist from a catalog you created that had already downloaded the files as CAB and not XML.
This is a known issue that has been discussed on other Communties forums. You have to change how we get the files from Shavlik. Rather than get them as CAB files, you download them as XML. If you already have existing CAB files, you have to manually extract them.
You can easily test this. Go make the change in "Configuration > Patch Global Configuration" on the "Shavlik URL Configuration" tab. Make sure you save it with the correct Save icon. Verify that both URLs now end in .xml and not .cab. Then go create a new catalog and try to update it.
there should be more of a stack trace in the appserver.log can you please attach that?
one possibility is that you did not update the appserver for the shavlik change last fall. if so, then you need to replace the NSH/br/stdlib/windows-feed-1.0-SNAPSHOT.jar w/ the one here: ftp://ftp.bmc.com/pub/shavlikfix/8.1/GA_to_SP2/
and restart the appserver.
