Do you see any logs in appserver.log..!
Does your auth profile contains name of the appserver/ip.. Is your box able to resolve the appserver name if that is the case..!
Also do you have got a client installed on the same box through which you are able to login..!
Yes, its known defect and support come back saying it will be fixed in SP3.
The only workaround to this issue is work in offline mode to install agents then add the servers to console.
