Does setting an event in an active link use a lot of resources in AR application and/or database servers?

Hopefully this is a simple answer.  I started using events on a couple of active links for two forms and, coincidently, I've noticed that the SQL database's memory usage is skyrocketing, yet the cpu utilization is quite low.  Now I think the two are completely unrelated, but it gave me pause and now I'm wondering what does setting an event do on the back-end?  I know an event is fired based on a change to the application state; I get that, I read the workflow PDF.  But I'm wondering is how much resources does an event use on the AR Application Server and/or AR databases?

      Thank you.
