WinPE hangs when ESXi guest is set to RHEL5x64

When I PXE boot a guest VM that has guest OS set to RHEL5 64-bit, the PE environment boots, but it hangs when the command prompt opens at WINPEINIT.

Same behavior whether I set the VM to 32-bit or 64-bit.  If I change the VM setting to guest OS equals Windows 2003 or 2008 it boots just fine.

So, am I doing something wrong with my PE image or approaching the whole thing wrong?  I need one default image that any VM or physical host will boot from and get far enough that it can be directed to boot the appropriate image for its provisioning job.
