how to skip License key for Windows2008server provisioning

    Siddu angadi

      Hi,

Is it possible to skip license key activation during provisioning of Windows 2008 server through Bladelogic Server Automation tool 8.0?

If so how to achieve it?

      Regards

      Siddu

Is this possible to do w/ an unattended windows installation?  I'd guess it involves modifying the unattend.xml file - figure out what changes need to be made, and then in the system package, make those changes in the unattend.xml customization area.

the intrinsic windows 2008 system package type does not allow this, it requires a value. however, the system package type for Windows 2008 R2 does not require one... this allows for the trial period to be played with. be warned though, the unattend.xml data generated by a 2008 install vs. a 2008 R2 install is different (minor, but different), so you're best off using the right os with that os type.

Skipping License key for Windows Server 2008 System Package can be achieved by using Additional Unattend Entries without actually customizing the Kickstart.

Below are the steps to use a blank license key for Windows Server 2008.

              1. Create a Windows 2008 System Package with dummy License Key.
              2. Go to ‘Unattend Entries’ tab and ‘Add a new additional unattended script’ button with ‘+’ sign in Additional Unattend Entries panel.
              3. In the Unattend XML tree node Go to unattend-settings[@pass=’windowsPE’]-component[…@name=’Microsoft-Windows-Setup’]-UserData-ProductKey-Key.
              4. Selecting ‘Key’ node in the unattend tree will display the Key tag with dummy License key entered in System Package.
              5. Now copy the entire ‘Key’ tag <Key>XXXXX-…</Key> and paste it in the ‘Add/Replace XML Component’ panel below.
              6. Remove the tag value ‘XXXXX-…’, keeping it empty as <Key></Key> or <Key/>.
              7. Select the ‘Replace the selected node’ radio button and click Ok.
              8. Check that the Unattend Entries xml will now display a empty <Key/>.
              9. Provision Windows 2008 using this System Package without a license key and without using a custom Kickstart, but just replacing one single node value.
