    Shavlik Methodology

I know that VPC uses UNIX commands like showrev and up2date to determine if a patch is installed. How does the Shavlik engine accomplish the same? Does it scan the registry, or is it able to determine the patch level by examining DLLs?

It can be a combination of registry, dlls, or other files. Each patch will have its own requirements to determine the patch state. For Missing patches, from the Server View of the analysis results you can see some of this information by selecting a patch and looking under the "Reason:" section e.g.:

File version is less than expected. [C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\tcpip.sys 5.0.2195.6706 < 5.0.2195.7147]
