Just to clarify, are you trying to set up:
server group containing servers A, B, and C in a server group connected to database X
server D not in a server group also connected to database X?
Or, something else?
I have servers A, B, C and D in a server group connected to database X.
a) I want to remove server D from the server group.
b) Then, if possible, get server D to startup as a standalone server also pointing to database X.
The problem is that I am unable to do step (a). I would like to know if (b) is possible.
Step (b) will be problematic at best. I suppose it's possible, because the database won't know the difference, but you will run into problems.
Can I ask what your end goal is here?
Remove server D from server group.
What kind of actions will be executed on server D?
1. Read only actions
2. Normal workflow (read / create / update entries) - set parameter "Next Request ID Block Size" to the same value on all servers (A,B,C,D)
4. Dev Studio modifications
5. CMDB, Flashboards, SLA,...
I think the first two levels will be ok, but the others are critical.
Remember to create a mechanism to send (ar)signals for recaching to that server and vice versa.
But I do not know how the license for that server / user / applications are handled - maybe you need new ones.
My question was: What are you trying to achieve by removing it from the server group? What is the goal of the action? What problem are you trying to solve?@
We do not have an issue. We just want to remove a server from the server group and move it to a different non-production env.
Just clearing the Server Group Member field does not work (tried and tested). When the server is brought back up, it recreated entries in the Ranking form as it was still referencing the database X.
Hence I need to know the steps involved to remove the server from the server group. Does it involve :
# re-pointing the Server name and Database to a different environment (in ar.conf)
# deleting entries from the Ranking form
# deleting entry of the server D from the AR System Monitor form.
Is there anything else to be done?
Is there another easy way to remove server from server group?
Well, to actually remove the server from the server group, you would point it to a different database.
You could make a copy of your existing database and then point server D to this new copy. You should then be able to uncheck the server group checkbox.
(There are documented steps to follow when you move a server to a different database. There's a knowledge article somewhere on the BMC site.)
If it's connected to the same database instance, it IS part of a group whether the checkbox is checked or not.
MAYBE you could force the issue with OS level tricks and have it point to the same DB, but I don't think this would give you anything helpful.

In current versions of Remedy, a server IS part of a server group, regardless of it it's the only server or not....it's not possible to remove it from a group.
Whatever you are trying its possible. As LJ stated in current version the option will be by default server group member regardless of whether server is standalone or server group. What you have to do please follow the below steps.
1.) Stop service of server D which is in server group.
2.) Modify the ar.cfg/ar.conf file of server D and add the Data base (precreated and having same AR DB user, AR DB Password and Role)name
3.) Make sure in new db there is no any server pointing except server D, for that fire CRUD operation on below table.
4.)Start AR Service of D.
5.) For existing server group containing servers A, B and C alos make sure there is no pointing for server D, delete and update the below table from existing server group DB tables after stoping services C,B abd A AR servers.
6.) Start server A, B, C one by one now.
