      Hi Everyone,

We are on BMC Remedy ARS,ITSM Suite 9.1.04.002 along with RSSO and DWP.

Would like to know best approach for upgrading our Environments to 1908.

Can we directly upgrade to 1908 following the normal Process as below

      1. Upgrade ARS=>AtriumCore=>CMDB=>ITSM Suite =>SRM=>SLM to 1908 and then to 1908 Patch01 and then Mid Tier Upgrade followed by RSSO and DWP ?
      2. Or do we need to upgrade MidTier and RSSO to 1908 first?

As we are already on 9.1.04.002 please suggest.

Appreciate response at your earliest availability.

      Thanks;--Abdul Moid

You cannot upgrade ITSM SRM SLM directly to 1908.

          Upgrade AR/CMDB/MidTier/RSSO to 1908

          Upgrade ITSM/SRM/SLM to 1805

          Use D2P to upgrade ITSM/SRM/SLM to 1908.

            Thanks Sidhesh,

As per the information i have it from BMC .

This 19.08 release continues to use deployment packages for the upgrade of Service Request Management, Service Level Management, and the other Remedy IT Service Management applications from version 18.05, 18.08, or 19.02. The use of deployment packages makes the Remedy IT Service Management applications upgrade process faster. If you are upgrading to version 19.08 from earlier versions (for example, version 9.1), you must use the upgrade installers to upgrade to version 18.05 and then apply the deployment package. The upgrades of Remedy AR System, CMDB, Smart IT, and Remedy Single Sign-On continue to be done via installers, directly to version 19.08. For more information, see Remedy Deployment.

Would like to know if there is any specific instructions to be followed apart from Upgrading as suggested by you to 1908 below..

Upgrade AR/CMDB/MidTier/RSSO to 1908 ( this is can proceed directly without going from 1805?)

Upgrade ITSM/SRM/SLM to 1805 ( This needs to go to 1805 from 9.1.04.002 which is our Current version?)

Use D2P to upgrade ITSM/SRM/SLM to 1908.( once done with ITSM/SRM/SLM to 1805)

Please confirm so that we can proceed on it at the earliest on our Non Prods

Thanks for the prompt response as always Much Appreciated!

                Hi,

to add to as to why this is required to go via 18.05 for ITSM:

                • MyIT/SmartIT was split into 2 different products (DWP and SmartIT) and the database was moved away from Mongo
                • 18.05 was the last version where an installer was required for an upgrade and brings in the Deployment Console functionality for any further upgrades - thus allowing you to individually control the release of the packages across multiple servers allowing for no downtime upgrades

Note: Be aware of the Deployment Console configuration requirements with respect to the plugin server and other configurations for the larger packages.  the Servers will also need sufficient memory to successfully import/download and install the packages.

                Cheers

                Carl

                  Thanks Carl for the details.

We would like to know the details on Centralized Configurations and their backup to retain prior to Upgrade ( Export and Import them ) as soon as we are done with the upgrade.

As we are not using Smart IT so we should be good with the upgrade of DWP and the latest version of it.

Do we need to take any precautions/additional steps for moving with this upgrade of DWP ?

Current version at our End - Smart_IT2.0.00_DigitalWorkplace18.02 so can we directly go to 1908?

Appreciate response as always with all the updates/details we get from Communities.

Is there any Compatibility matrix for having the sufficient memory at our Environment apart from the one below.

REMEDY 9.x/18xx/19xx Release - CONFIGURATION CHECKLIST from the BMC R&D PERFORMANCE TEAM

                    Hi Abdul,
did you already run the upgrade?

We are also upgrading to 19.08.

Platform is fine and now we are deploying the packages for ITSM, SRM and SLM.

ITSM is upgraded successful after some workaround and fixes.

We are facing several problems in the upgrade with the installer and also with the deployment console.

As this system is out-of-the-box its a very strange behaviour.

So I want to ask you, if your upgrade run without problems?

                    Best regards

                        Hi Abdul Moid,

                        we've upgraded successfully.

Now we're setting up a new system with 19.08 fresh install.

AR/CMDB/AI was very easy - ITSM, SRM and SLM also.

Afterwards we were trying to install Smart Reporting, which had some problems with external tomcat.

At this point, we're waiting for BMC hotfix.

If you have some special questions, just drop me a message.

                        You're welcome :-)

                        Best regards

                          Hi Philipp,

One more query in regards to this upgrade!

Do we need to take any special instructions/precautions for the BIRT version 4.8.0,which comes as part of installer/Introduced with ARS?

Appreciate response with the required details at your earliest availability!

                            Hi Everyone,

I would like to split the upgrade into two parts

                            • Scheduled Window 1 – Platform Upgrade (Mid-Tier/ARS/CMDB/RSSO to 1908) With a downtime for Validating the Environment by performing initial testing with support team
                            • Scheduled Window 2 – Application Upgrade (ITSM/SRM/SLM) to 1805 and Use D2P to upgrade ITSM/SRM/SLM to 1908 which might include DWP upgrade too?

If I can hold on for some days/take sometime after completing the upgrade(Mid-Tier/ARS/CMDB/RSSO to 1908).

In the meanwhile when we are on hold for Scheduled window2 can we do any of the Developments on this environment which is still pending for Application Upgrade.

Appreciate response with all the required queries answered at your earliest availability.

Any concerns/issues related do let me know.

                            Thanks;--Abdul Moid

                              Hi Abdul,

generally for an upgrade, the following is recommended as you hadn't mentioned if you were going to do this:

                              1. Upgrade a Reference environment, which mimics the Production environment in the way of number of Servers, Configuration, etc.  You can then do this upgrade at least twice (restore DB and perform upgrade again) where you can gauge timings, corrections, etc. that need to be performed after the upgrade.  This then gives you a time window for how long Production would take, and what needs to be done after the upgrade.  You can do ARS/CMDB/MT/RSSO and this can be zero downtime (based on your approach), or minimal downtime for these components.
                              2. Do the same as above for ITSM on a Reference environment.  There will be downtime, but you can gauge timings, corrections, etc. that need to be performed after the upgrade and therefore schedule a time window for Production based on this.  As with step 1. if you can do this a couple of times in a Reference environment then you have a great platform for performing a Production upgrade as you know what to expect and what to do after the upgrade is complete.

Of course full regression testing is required, as there are some changes made to configurations and settings during the upgrade, but performing this on a Reference environment allows you to first understand what will be involved in the Production upgrade.

                              Cheers

                              Carl

                                Hi Carl,

Yes we will have Referenced Environment all the times when we upgrade

We will upgrade the Demo/DEV/TST Environments for getting the Exact timings and regressive testing for the same and usually we always divide the Upgrade into two scheduled windows

                                1. Platform (ARS/Atrium CMDB/Atrium Integrator/RSSO) and

                                2. Application the next ( ITSM/SRM/SLM) followed by DWP in it.

But as per BMC one of the support folks said not to have gap for this upgrade of 1 and 2 with no development so was the concern to raise queries.

Appreciate your inputs for the positive Upgrade at your earliest convenience.

                                Thanks;--Abdul Moid

                                  Hi Abdul,

yes it would be recommended to not have a large gap between the 2 windows, and as mentioned a code freeze should be in place.

The last upgrade I did there was zero downtime on the first part, and an outage window on the second part (however you can mitigate this someone if using SmartIT/DWP, although not recommended).

However it is worth noting, that after this is completed future upgrades can be done with zero downtime - so it is taking some pain now to benefit in the future once upgraded.

                                  Cheers

                                    Thanks for the Quick update.

Yes we do use DWP so it might be an issue while upgrading zero Downtime upgrade as it will not be available so we will need to have a scheduled downtime once decided on timings.

Any other Precautions/Special instruction that needs to be taken care as part of this Upgrade kindly so let me know.

As always much appreciated with the support/guidance/information i always get from Communities.
