Task status is updated to "Assigned" status only when Assignee is provided.
You can refer below task status transition:
Could you verify status transitions in task's audit log? It should normally start as Staged and move to Assigned once it is activated -- it shouldn't matter if it is assigned to support group or to (support) person.
Thanks for your response. In the tasks audit log, i could see the status moved to Pending from Staged status. In the OOTB the status should become Assigned from Staged correct?
Ankit has already given you correct answer.
The task assignee makes difference in this case.
you and Ankit are both referring to Release Management, and in that context you are correct. However, original post mentions "We have a scenario in Task (for change)" and according to Change task status transitions - Documentation for BMC Change Management 8.1 - BMC Documentation lack of assignee should not matter. Am I misinterpreting something?
Seems like documentation defect and need to update.

I see a OOTB filter TMS:TAS:ActiveToPendingAssigned which sets the status and status reason to pending assignment.
So the key I believe is that, for Manual tasks, even if group assignment is done, but individual assignment is not done, it will be set as pending assignmeent.
needs a special mention of manual tasks behavior. I have added a comment on the doc page.
