Can you try unchecking , checking the "Unread Only" checkbox .
If it does not help , try changing the browser .

I see this at times as well. Most of the time refreshing the page with a F5 or opening a new tab helps.
In the worst case, clearing browser cache might help too.
YEs, I tried that option before asking. Only it was cleared when i saw another incoming message in inbox and then it cleared out the unread count.

I get the same thing on a periodic basis....I do the following things in this order, if each one doesn't work, I move onto the next option
Mark all read
Log out and back on
I've rarely seen the first not fix it, if not, the second fixes it....I rarely need to do the 3rd.....and I've VERY rarely (maybe a hand full of times) over the years had the combination of the 5 not fix it....in those situations, as you described...when another actually pops up in the inbox, reading it will typically clear the problem.
