The Remedy administrator said this was another feature that did not work as expected. If I can improve the quality of data coming from BMC Discovery, then it makes the administrator's job easier.

No, this is not doing anything with the ManufacturerName, that is coming from the device itself.
This, as Brice says, really should be done by normalisation in the CMDB.
You first need to determine which Discovery node kinds you are looking at changing. Then you want a syncmapping which maps from the appropriate base syncmappings, e.g.
mapping from NetworkDevice_ComputerSystem.device
Then you want a body which look as the name and converts it is appropriate
computersystem := NetworkDevice_ComputerSystem.device_cs or
manufacturer := computersystem.ManufacturerName;
if manufacturer in normalise_name then
computersystem := normalise_name[manufacturer];
where normalise_name is a table you define in the syncmapping.
Thank you. I'll give this a try.

As Knowledge, I am not a fan of the BMC product Qualität, especially the ITSM Suite. But in this case your Remedy Administrator is wrong. The normalization of the manufacturer name has worked really well for many versions.
Your advantage is that you have a central place and can normalize all your sources purely configuratively.
