not that I'm aware of
I didn't think it worked that way but it has been a while since I have tried that.
He already has it set that way...you can tell because the drop down is 'attached' to the right side of the field instead of their being a gap...if it was set standard there would be a gap...
Thanks for pointing it out, I am old man, definitely missed it.
But when you have display property set to drop-down-list then as soon as you click inside the character field it display the list to choose. I tested before responding to thread. I might not have fully understand what exactly Sergey is trying to do or its not working setting the drop down list.

I just created (AR/MT 9.1 SP4) a character field with a menu, set to Drop-Down List and a selection field set to Drop-Down List. The character field does not expand when clicking in the text area of the field but the selection list does. I tried in Chrome and FF (pretty sure it is not different between browsers but wanted to try 2).
This inconsistency has bothered since they ability to show a menu on a character field as Drop-Down List was introduced. The only benefit I have found was when auto-complete was added a little later, you could type to auto-complete in a character field with a menu set to Drop-Down List.
Another difference between a character field and selection is you can modify and/or enter free text into a character field set to Drop-Down List. A selection field has to be one of the selection options.
Now I really feel old, I quickly (tested to avoid cache sync and few more steps) on user tool which clicking inside the field displayed the list.
Now tested after sync the cache and you are right its been long time never knew it stopped working on midtier side. Is it possible it could be a defect and no one noticed?
I don't remember it ever working the same as a selection field.

Ok, I got it working. Here is clearly says it will work in non-search mode.
Drop-Down List — Users can select a value from a drop-down list. Values available in the list are from a menu attached to the character field. This option is available only if the character field has a menu attached to it. This option is different from the drop-down list for a selection field although they look similar. In non-Search modes, such as New and Modify, users can select a value from the list but cannot type directly in the field. In Search mode, users can either select a value from the list or type directly in the field. Users can also enter partial list values, such as "Business" instead of "Business Services," to find all requests whose value in the field includes the word "Business."
When I open the form in submit / Modify mode and it is working. I was earlier trying in search mode but it works in user tool in search mode as well.
Nice find! Learn something new everyday
I just did some testing trying to change the value after selecting (New and Modify) and I was not able to. Even when trying to paste test into the field (which I am pretty sure worked at one point).

Funny, I just noticed this behavior in production on AST:Computer System. I clicked on Product Name in modify and it opened the menu, I changed to search and now can type a value (and it didn't open). I must have known this subconsciously seeing as I work with the fields all the time (at least that is the story I am sticking with).
Incredibly. While I was sleeping, there's a whole scientific research going on. Thank you so much :-)
Before writing, I tried with the attribute Display Type as Drop-Down list and оn version 7.6.04 does not work, tried on 9.1.04 - the menu opens perfectly by pressing the text, as well as the arrow. And it's all on the same form.
But in this case, the menu object is created, but immediately collapses and is deleted. Visually, I see only a strip for a split second from the menu and all.
Thats what the community is for, we care each other while one is enjoy sweet dreams rest are trying to reproduce and find the workaround.
Unfortunately i don't have 7.x environment anymore otherwise would have tested.
