we can access one instance from one id at a time.
AP | NA | EU | CS are the possible instances for salesforce.
AP - Asia / Pacific
NA - North America
EU - EMEA
CS - Sandboxes
any environment will have a URL like https://na12.salesforce.com (example), in which u have na12 instance being used. Instance may vary depending on the location or other things related to the organization.
AP | NA | EU - Production Environment Instances
CS - Sandbox Environment Instances
The instance in the URL may change if there is any maintenance going on to the sever or any other possible issue, which infact won't affect the performance as it will automatically switch the instance for your organization.
So salesforce is being transparent and allowing users to check issues related to status, maintenance, performance and security which can be tracked at https://trust.salesforce.com.
Developer edition has one production environment associated with few licenses to practice and have a glance at it. It does not have any sandbox environment.
As Sneha mentioned in above reply, the instances is required and even bmcservicedek key in URL is required. Because KM_ArticleView page is the part of remedyforce package.
I understand that but in most scenarios, you can use the domain instead. This is so that you can share links and they won't be out-dated when the Instance is changed. I was hoping the Knowledge Article View link can be wrote to work the same way.
Here are some areas where domain works instead of NA##.

You can try below URL without instance name:
Thank you! I missed your original mention of needing to add bmcservicedek key. The below does indeed work. Reference for anyone else that comes across this..
Thanks Joshua and Suman - great sharing
