How can I enable persistent command history in NSH shell ?

I'm frequently using NSH as a shell on Windows, and I would like to keep the command history in a file so I can recall it even after I close and re-open the shell window. I've tried setting the HISTFILE variable in my .nshrc file and enabling the INC_APPEND_HISTORY option but it doesn't seem to work and the history file is never created. Once I close the shell and re-open it, the history from the previous shell is gone.
