can you set the timeout value in the default line of the secure file in your appservers? add timeout=120 ?
The timeout error occurs almost instantaneous. As soon as the job is launched. We will try this, but it doesn't explain why it would work sometimes and not others.
Is this during a period of high load? Using automation principals and nsh roxy?

High load - We've seen it happen we run against multiple Windows servers at once, but never with Linux servers - and we have far, far more Linux boxes.
Automation Principles - Yes.
NSH Proxy - No. I am trying to find out more about this and if we need it. Years back when we installed BL our consultant we had on-site told us we didn't need one. Though I keep hearing it mentioned more and more. So time to revisit this I think.
You need an nsh proxy if:
- you need NSH Script, File Deploy and Patching jobs to pickup the AP credentials.
- you want to force users to connect though the appserver to the target for nsh.
