    8.6 Upgrade Configuration Issue

    Patrick O'Callaghan

In the Process of doing an 8.6 upgrade from 8.3.2 BSA and BDSSA.  The BSA and BDSSA environments are on Windows 2008R2 and Microsoft SQL.  As per the docs The BDSSA upgrade was done first.  After the upgrade completed I am trying to give BDSSA the existing passwords as these are apparently removed during the upgrade.  I am able to configure the Warehoese Database, Master Repository, Work Repository, and Portal Database Passwords.

When attempting to configure the Site Primary Password I am getting "Primary Site Datavase link: BDS-3028 User does not have permission to perform this action.  Please create linked server with name:BSA_SITE1_77"  and gives me a link to the create_linked_server_for_om.sql.

The linked server already existed before the upgrade as DB_SITE1_LINK which is what the script creates.

I was able to run "select * from db_site1_link.<BladeLogic Database Name>.dbo.agent_state" and it returned 4 rows so I assume the link is good, but BDSSA is just not seeing it?

Does the Link need to be recreated after the upgrade or should I continue along with the BSA Upgrade and come back to configure the password?

      Thank you.

I’d open a support ticket on this if you haven’t.

The issue was the linked server had the incorrect name since BMC changed the naming convention in the newer releases but the script has not been updated with the new naming convention.  Editing the create_linked_server_for_om.sql to reflect the new name fixed the report server configuration error.

A new Issue popped up while continuing on to the BSA upgrade which is confusing.  After the Unified product installer discovers the infrastructure and is about to do the install it checks a couple prereqs.  At this point it throws an error saying "User xxx(local user account logged into server) does not have privileges to perform the upgrade.  Please set up read and write privileges to access the computer using the RSCD agent.

Before this step, the unified product installer prompts for an authentication profile and a bladelogic user account and password.  I have used both a BLAdmins user account with LDAP and the actual BLAdmin account with SRP.

The user it is complaining about however is the local user I am logged into the server with, not the bladelogic account I entered into the installer.  The user is a domain user with elevated privileges.  We have also tried a domain admin account, the local Admin account and a brand new account named BLAdmin created and added to the Administrators group.

The exports file has * rw,user=Administrator, the Users.local file has BLAdmins:* rw,map=Administrator and also tried with System:System rw,map=Administrator.  I tried Install with a blank users file and with a users file generated by an acl push and removed the nouser entry.

Also, before these prereqs it does an infrastructure discovery and checks rscd access and all the servers say rscd is up or server is up, which should mean that the agents have full privileges because previously it was saying rscd with limited access until I fixed the access permissions in the rsc files.

When I ran this upgrade in my test environment I just used the local admin account and it didn't come back with any permissions issues.  Also to mention, UAC is completely turned down.

                  Yeah,

seeing the same behaviour in my Lab env.

As the Unified Installer is not supporting the use of an NSH-Proxy, it would use "local" NSH-only authentication.

Due to that you are seeing your local OS user being used during the process.

What messages are popping up in the RSCD log of the Targets, when this happens ?

I think i also "just" added that local Account to the users.local and all went fine in the end.

The RSCD log is showing ">Administrator@AppServer:PrivilegeMapped(Local User):" and it is performing copy, blquery, nexec, and rm operations and I don't see any errors.

What would be the syntax for using a local user in the users.local file? I have tried a number of different entries and all result in the upgrade throwing a does not have permissions error.

                      Mine looks like this:

                      BLAdmins:BlAdmin    rw,map=Administrator
                      SYSTEM:SYSTEM       rw,map=Administrator
                      RBACAdmins:RBACAdminrw,map=Administrator
                      System:System       rw,map=Administrator
                      local_userrw,map=Administrator

Can't really remember, why there is System and SYSTEM inside

the only thing you should need in users.local would be:

                        BLAdmins:BLAdmin rw,map=Administrator

                        and maybe

                        <os user>  rw,map=Administrator

but you should lock that down w/ a hosts= entry to allow the user only from certain systems.

SYSTEM:SYSTEM -> maybe a workaround for the 'Commands' issue w/ compliance?  otherwise you don't need this

System:System -> this is an internal role:user that the appserver uses to communicate w/ the file server agent on startup.  this would only be used on the file server agent if other mapping wasn't setup

RBACAdmins -> RBACAdmins typically does not have the ability to do anything to servers so you wouldn't need this.

BLAdmins would be there as a fail safe where they would still be able to fix acls on the box if bad acls were pushed out into users.

                          Patrick O'Callaghan

If my domain user I am logging in with is patrick I tried with the entry:

                          patrick     rw,map=Administrator

Since this is a domain account I also tried:

                          domain\patrick     rw,map=Administrator

I then created a local account (not domain account) patrick and put the account in the admin group and had the users.local entry:

                          patrick     rw,map=Administrator

                          so my users.local looks like

                          BLAdmins:BLAdmin    rw,map=Administrator

                          SYSTEM:SYSTEM           rw,map=Administrator

                          RBACAdmins:RBACAdmin    rw,map=Administrator

                          System:System           rw,map=Administrator

                          patrick           rw,map=Administrator

Then I tried right clicking the setup.exe and selected run as with a domain admin account and added the domain admin account to the users.local file

and yet I am still getting

                          • 1. User patrick does not have privileges to perform the upgrade. Please set up read and write privileges to access the computer using the RSCD agent.

What might be strange is I am seeing this permission issue on the 2 App servers and the PXE server but not the file server.  I know the file server handles permissions different but if I copy over the users.local and exports files from the file server to the App servers I still get the permissions issue.

Is there a way that I can open up the RSCD agent to every user imaginable?  I know that would not be advisable to keep that way but I can just lock it down after the upgrade is completed.

Here is the RSCD Agent log, it looks like it is mapping my account to the rscd account as Administrator, but the Installer is saying not enough permissions.

I cleared users and users.local and just had the * rw,user=Administrator in the exports file and it still says user patrick does not have permission.

Administrator is the built-in administrator account on the target?

If you do ‘agentinfo server’ against whatever servers from the same box you are running the installer from as the same os user, what do you see ?
