    Create server smartgroup with random

    Deepak Rajput

      Hi Team,

      I want to create smart group with random IP address.

      There are few servers for which down time is planned, so i want to create one smart group for which down time schedule.

      It is very difficult to add one by one address and make rule on that basis.

      Is it possible to import CSV file with IP address in it.or other way.

      10.10.15.185

      10.10.15.19

      10.10.15.229

      10.10.15.233

          Yes, Please follow below steps to import the multiple servers.

          * Create one .csv file which should contain ( The file should be on the RCP client machine)

          The type of character encoding that should be used for exported data, such as UTF8 or UTF16.

          Example-

          Name,IPAdress

          host1,10.10.10.10

          host2,10.10.10.10

          host3,10.10.10.10

          To import servers

          Open the Serversfolder and do one of the following:

          1.Right-click the Servers node (the top node in the Servers folder) and select Import Servers from the pop-up menu.

          2. Right-click a server group and select Import Servers to Group from the pop-up menu.

            The Import Servers wizard opens.

            Provide information for the Import Server wizard, as described in the following sections:

            Import Servers - Import Servers

            Import Servers - Permissions

          3. Click Finish.

          background process imports the servers in the list. Depending on how you have specified behavior for background processes, either a dialog box displays or the Show background operations icon appears in the lower right corner of the console. Both indicate an operation is running in the background.

          When the import is complete, a dialog box tells you how many servers were successfully imported and lists any servers that may have failed to import, along with a reason for each failure.

          Regards,

          Abhishek

            so there's a couple options here:

            - use a static group and the 'import servers to group' w/ your csv

            - write a script that reads the csv and adds conditions to the smart group for each server in the list.

              Why you are trying to create a server smart group ? what are you trying to do with those server scheduled for downtime.

              I dont see a necessity of doing so unless you are have some activity to be perfomed against those. Smart group are based upon some property based condition. Since you have list of hostnames/IPAddress, a static seerver group should do.

              You can follow the steps of Abhishek and import servers to a static server group and then import the server by selecting the csv file.

              Monoj

                Smart group is condition based. If there is no condition, you cannot create the smart group.

                Either you can create a static group and then import the servers to that, or you can set some properties to these servers in the CSV and use that property to create a smart group.

                  Hi All,

                  Thanks for reply team.

                  I want to just inform you that all this servers are there in other servers smart group, but temporary i want to create one more server smart group with this servers.

                    as per your last comment you have down time scheduled for those servers. Once the server is down RSCD service will also be down. I think there is a OOB server smart group like Agent Not Responding. In that case why are you explicitly trying to create a server smart group ?

                    If you still wish to have these server under a new smart group then you need use property (lets say server_status=downtime where server_status is a custom property. go to property dictionary view to create custom property or optionally you can use any unused existing server property. ) and set some value against that. now create a smart group satisfying that criteria.

                      I dont Know what you want exactly but you can create a smartgroup with the needed conditions to filter your IPs. for exemple:

                      match => all

                      Any => Server => IP_ADRESS => contains => 10.10.15.

                      Any => Server =>AGENT_STATUS => is one of => "agent is not responding", "agent is not installed"....

                      .....

                      or something like that...

                      this exemple will filter all 10.10.15.xxx IPs with not installed/not responding agents and you should create conditions like that

                        this may not be a good idea

                        match => all

                        Any => Server => IP_ADRESS => contains => 10.10.15.

                        Any => Server =>AGENT_STATUS => is one of => "agent is not responding", "agent is not installed"....

                        If you specify IP_ADDRESS conatins 10.10.15 logic then the samrt group will only contain servers matching this pattern. what about other servers with different other pattern ?

                        10.10.8.XXX

                        10.10.9.XXX and so on...

                        generally in an infrastructure may contain servers with various IP_Address pattern and you never know what it could be. So it is always better to go with reliable approach.

                          In that case you should create a Property or properties for thoes Servers and filter them over the created properties. An other way as Bill said, is to install a proxy Server like Dante or something like that and over seting some properties. the Third way is to import the servers via csv list into a group as Abhishek Tundalwar said.
