BladeLogic Agent 8.1 does not start

    Martín Ponce

I´m facing an strange behavior of the BL Agents (RSCD) 8.2 in a few servers.

In these servers, once I installed the product it works fine until we reboot the server. As soon as we reboot them, the RSCD service is unable to start.

Looking deep in the dependencies and requierements we found the BL user account (BladeLogicRSCD) is being locked.

Looking in the first attempt to run, I found this:

Is there anybody with the same problem?

I tried to find this problem in the KDB , without luck.

      Any help will be appreciated.

      Martin

i would look at a few things:

            - in HKLM\Security grant yourself permissions and then see if the registry keys under HKLM\Security\SAM\BladeLogic\Operations Manger are there ( something like that - there should be E and S values in there)

            - is the rscd service dependent on 'Server' and 'NetLogon' ?

there's also been a number of fixed to the rscd in 8.2 and 8.3 to fix locking issues - what version of BSA is on the appserver in your env ?

I will look for those patchs you mentioned.

I have these services up and running, but I tried to restart the service, and it falls again.

Even I had to unlock the user again. And as soon as I try to start it, it goes locked again.

                Yeah,

we have had to fight this issue lots of times.

We even wrote a "Custom Command", which uses psexec to

                • go to the Target Server
                • Stop the Service
                • Delete the locale BladeLogicRSCD account
                • Start the Service again

The only final fix is still to upgrade to a higher Agent version.

                  Hi Steffen,

are you sure the workaround of this, is deleting the local user BladeLogicRSCD?

I supossed this user is created to handle procedures of the BL Agent.

Maybe you tried to tell me this?

                  • go to the Target Server
                  • Stop the Service
                  • Delete the locale BladeLogicRSCD account
                  • create again the locale BladeLogicRSCD account
                  • Start the Service again

Thanks for your answer. As a plus... do you know which version of BL Agent solves this problem?

I´m sure there must be a patch to solve this.

Thank you again, I will test it.

You don't want to create the BladeLogicRSCD account yourself -- the Agent does that. It sounds like you are listing that as a part of an intended solution.

if you want to see the possible cause of the error:

                      - in the c:\windows\rsc\log4crc.txt change the logging level from 'info1' to 'debug' on the rscd line.

                      - in the rscd.log line in the same file, change the 'rollmaxfiles' from 10 to 100

                      - stop the rscd service

                      - delete the BladeLogicRSCD user and the <install dir>\rscd.log* files

                      - delete the HKLM\Security\SAM\BladeLogic\Operations Manager keys

                      - start the service

                      - zip up the rscd.log files and attach...

that might give us a clue as to why the account is locking.  but it's likely that the cause of this is fixed in a later agent version - like 8.3.03 - which would also require an appserver upgrade to the same version.

as tony mentions, starting the service will restart the agent and re-create the noted registry keys.

                        Hi,

the Agent creates the user on its own again when the service is started.

So you can safely go ahead and delete the User.

                          Thanks to all.

It worked. At least until the next reboot. I hope once It is restarted, the account were unblocked.

                          I followed these steps:

                          1- stoped the RSCD service.

2- deleted the RSCD user and the <install dir>\rscd.log* files

3- set the log to debug.

                          4- started the RSCD service.

5- set the log to info1 again.

After I started the service, the RSCD user appeared again and the server got connected in the console.

I will back to you with news as soon as the servers will be restarted.

                          Thanks a lot guys.
