I have successfully upgraded BSA from 8.2.03 to 8.5.00
What OS and DB is your app server using?
Ben asked some good questions.
My experience (have used BSA since 7.5) is that you cannot skip versions, meaning you would have to upgrade to 8.3 and then to 8.5. The upgrade documentation should cover this.
You should also ask Support what types of changes have been made to the database in 8.3 and and 8.5 You may or many not have large amounts of data created by using functionality that has significant database changes in 8.3 or 8.5. This in turn will effect how long your upgrade will take.
Good luck and please let us know how your upgrade turns out.
Hi David Archbold. 8.5 is still under Select Market Availability which means that a few customers have deployed the product and tested their use cases but it is not considered officially released as yet to everyone. Majority of the customers have had minor issues during the upgrade but have stated that this was one of the easiest upgrades they have encountered with BSA.
The results from those upgrades and implementations have been noted and fixes being developed. We will be deploying those fixes this week as part of "Patch 1" release. The list of fixes will be posted in the Whats New section in Docs for 8.5 so keep a look out for that tomorrow.
The servers are running Windows Server 2008 SP2 and SQL Server 2008.
Ah, that is good to know! We had some back and forth discussion about this actually, and had some conflicting info regarding whether 8.5 was "officially" released. I'll get confirmation on this but I'm glad you mentioned it!
Both the db and os versions you mentioned are supported in 8.5
Chris Voudouris, it's not accurate that you cannot skip versions. The supported upgrade paths, as always are listed in the product documentation: https://docs.bmc.com/docs/display/bsa85/Preparing+for+upgrade#Preparingforupgrade-Supportedupgradepaths
I have just upgraded BSA 8.3 to 8.5 successfully and it is the easiest upgrades with BSA,
But faced some issues like:
- While Upgrading RSCD agent on Windows Server, we were getting exit code 13 though the RSCD agent is properly installed.
- While Upgrading RSCD agent on Linux Server, we were getting exit code 127.
- After upgrading BSA , we were getting SSO Proxy URL issue. ProxyServiceURL does not match with the current profile.
Finally we came to solutions & some workarounds for the above issues and get resolved, while for the last issue, BMC is coming with Patch 1 for 8.5.
But overall experience with 8.5 is really good.
And for BSA supported upgrade paths,
Thank you for the correction. A direct upgrade path is certainly the best way to go, and I will be looking at this with great interest now.
Thanks for providing information on possible errors that we may encounter during upgradation from 8.3 to 8.5.
We are planning for such an upgarde can you please provide information on what all new features have been introduced in BL 8.5 .
Also once we get this information we might need your help during upgradation process.
You can look on the docs.bmc.com site in the 8.5 release area in the ‘what’s new’ section for a list of new features in 8.5.
