We tried with the default credentials, still no go
No, SSL is not enabled on Smart Reporting Tomcat server.

When you login directly to the Smart Reporting Admin console, does the default reporting credentials (siadmin / siadmin) works ? If yes, the application admin login credentials are working fine with no issues and in case you have the correctly configured the report setting from Midtier configuration (with correct siadmin credentials and customer name) then you should not face the error ARERROR 9430 with login user as remedy user. If No, restart the Smart Reporting server and try to login with siadmin
During on boarding, as mentioned you are facing the error "Invalid BMC Remedy Smart Reporting credentials error while on boarding"
>> This happens in case the reporting admin credentials are provided incorrectly in case this did not happened. Then to debug more on this, we need to understand what happened on backend WebService call which takes care of the provided credentials validation
This error occurs when you are using SSL. Please confirm if you are accessing onboarding url with HTTP or HTTPS.

Please be careful, the reporting admin is not the super admin siadmin. These are two completely different types of users with very different permissions.
siadmin is the super admin and you can‘t change Hits name. The password is changeable, but not at installation. The default is siadmin.
Don‘t mix both users, you will never be happy!

Please try to login to Smart Reporting URL with user siadmin and the password provided in smart reporting installation.
As you are getting 'Invalid BMC Remedy Smart Reporting credentials' error, it means siadmin user locked due to multiple incorrect login attempts.
To reset the siadmin password, Please follow below knowledge article.
