Monitoring of printer counters with BMC Truesight is possible?

          Ranjith P K

Yes. You my use Light Weight Protocol KM v2.0 or above to monitor printers.

Identify the OIDs using the appropriate MIB file and create custom monitor using CMA.

          Regards

          Ranjith

Adding to Ranjith's comment, If you dont have mibs then you can identify oids snmpwalk as well, check values returned by oids and compare it with Printer's latest value (Reverse Engg.) Also each model may have different oids.

Once oids are identified, Create custom monitors with those oids under CMA, add printer devices and associate custom monitors which were created to them.

Thank you, for your help, we are trying to add the policy with BMC Presentation, we run snmpwalk.exe -v2c -c public 192.160.249.207 .1.3.6.1 getting OID for number of printed pages, but it does not show us in BMC Operation Management

                Hi Carlos,

If you have identified and gathered oids for a printer, You need to perform few more steps below.

                1) On a server, Install Patrol Agent with LWP km with latest version.

                2) Create a monitoring policy in presentation server and select LightWeight Protocol as monitoring solution, Monitoring Profile as SNMP, and Monitor Type as Custom Monitor

                3) Add Monitor, Specify Monitor Name, Click on Add Monitor Counter, Provide name and you need to add oids under oids/formula which has been identified along with that unit needs to be specified.

                4) Now, You need to specify device IP/Name for which you wish to check data, hence you need to again click on Add Monitoring configuration, select Monitoring Solution as LightWeight Protocol, Monitoring Profile as SNMP and Monitor Type as SNMP.

                5) Add Device IP/Name, specify community string, version and under select monitoring provide Monitor Names which was created under custom monitor. Click Ok and then restart the agent.

You should be able to see device in TSIM with a Custom Monitor

You may use mib browser utility to get entire set of oids (snmpwalk) and which can be used for validation purpose as well.

                Thanks & Regards,

                Sameer Pataskar

                    Hi Carlos,

                    From Policy Management,

just enable debug and check logs under %PATROL_HOME%\PSM\logs\java\agentport(default could be 3181)\

Under this, you may find folder with device name and under that you will see details about errors.

                    Thanks & Regards,

                      Hi Sameer,

Thank you very much for your help, following your instructions, the policy has already been carried out, it is working but the graph only shows configuration status and monitor status, when testing from the snmp agent tools it sends java error, since it is already configured on the server , annex images. please can you orient me that I will be failing.
                      thousand thanks in advance

Or you could use Monitoring Studio KM | Sentry Software which is not free but is a robust and mature product, used on tens of thousands of systems, and which happens to be able to poll SNMP agents (counters and all) and which supports SNMPv1, v2 and v3.

(yes I work for Sentry, so this sounds like an ad, but it really is just an honest advice ;-) )

Thanks for the feedback Bertrand, we do appreciate the recommendation as well. Sentry does work well. I think the user worked through their needs above, but it is good to point out there are other options. Thanks for participating in the BMC Community!

                            Dear Bertrand,

Is there any automatic way of discovering and creating instance for OID based on the MIB file or any other way for Studio SNMP polling .

I have a monitoring requirement OID are in 100's so trying to find out the easiest way to  discover and configure the same.

                            Regards

                              Hi Abhay,

Using the PATROL Classic Console, you will be able to configure Dynamic Instances in Monitoring Studio, based on the result of an SNMP table.

Unfortunately, this option is not available in CMA, because it was too complicated to implemented this feature in the CMA interface.

Razeem Mohamed will be able to help you when he gets back to the office (next week).

                              Thank you!
