i don't think this is a nic issue.he can break out of the init.bat we run and mount the share directly and then run the setup.exe. the OS path should not include the 'sources' dir in the path, it should point to the root of the directory w/ the extracted iso contents (W2008-R2-64). maybe that is corrupted ?
So this is what the issue is: when i remove the product key from the unattended entries file in the system pacakge but leave it in the license key field in the computer settings tab of the system package it works. i don't have this problem with windows 2008 non-R2. has anyone experienced this before?
what kind of license key is it ? volume, multiple activaction, or do you want to use kms ?
It's a MAK. (multiple activation)

have you tried this :
This is a known issue, which we documented a work around for in the 8.0 SP2 tech bulletin:
Installing Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 with a Multiple Activation Key
To install Windows Server 2008 R2 with a Multiple Activation Key, leave the License Key field blank on the Computer Settings panel when you create the system package. You can activate the key on the individual target server later or you can customize the unattend.xml file manually to activate the key at install time.
To customize the unattend.xml file to activate the MAK License key:
1 In the system package, click the Unattend Entries tab.
2 In the Additional Unattend Entries area, click Add a new additional Unattend script.
3 In the Generated Unattend area, under pass=specialize, select the Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup component.
4 In the Add/Replace XML Component area, select the Add to Selected Node radio button and add this entry:
<ProductKey>MAK Product Key</ProductKey>
Where "MAK Product Key" is the product key you want to activate.
5 Save the system package.
thanks Bill, yes I have left the license key field blank in the system pacakge and it does get activated once online.
