Unchanged Records

Edward Williams

Hello All,

Hope you had a great weekend!

Importing records into my CMDB using an Excel spreadsheet I get the following e-mail report:

Import complete.

Name of Ruleset (Name of CMDB)

Start: 06/18/2012 10:50 AM

Finish: 06/18/2012 10:53 AM

Status: Completed

Records: 1541

Created: 1534

Updated: 0

Unchanged: 7

Rejected: 0

The FootPrints Report does not show me which records were "unchanged". The FootPrints Report does however show me New Configuration Items, Rejected Configuration items and Updated Configuration Items.

How do I find out which ones were "Unchanged"?

Thank you in advance for your support.

    Hi Edward,

I'm not sure if not being able to drill down on the unchanged items after an import is by design or not, but you can get the listing of unchanged CIs by performing an Advanced search in the CMDB.

In the CMDB, click the Advanced button under the search at the top of the CMDB window.  Select the CI types that you imported and on the attributes tab, Select "Last Edit Date/Time", with a filter on "is before date".  Replace date with the date of your import.  Make sure you display the Last Edit Date/Time attribute as well as the name of the CI and any other desired info on the "Columns Displayed" tab.

Let me know if that helps.

    Howdy Michael,

Thank you for your response! There are many different CI Names in the Import. I have tried a few and received no Results. When there are 1500 unique CI Names and only 7 unchanged selecting the CI Name that could be one of the unchanged 7 becomes very tedious.

I know what you're thinking...if I try all of them chances are I'll find the answer...which is true. But if I do the work upfront prior to importing I'll also find the answer...right? What a quandry...

OK, so I'm using an Excel spreadsheet to perform the Import and it's easy enough to find any duplicate or triplicate information in it prior to the Import. But what I won't know is if any of the records that were "unchanged" were part of the Import I was performing at the time or if the Import I was performing at the time "unchanged" already existing records in the CMDB.

It would be so much easier...because BMC already provides a report for Imports that give you the Rejected Records, New Configuration Items and Update Configuration Items...if there was also an "Unchanged Configuration Items" list in that report also.

Did you try creating that search?  If the import doesn't change the CI, then the Last Edit Date/Time will not get updated to "today" or whenever you run your import.  The search should then only display the 7 records that were not last updated on 6/20 or whatever date you select.

OK, I deleted the CMDB, created a new one and performed the Import...so I'm pretty sure none of the 7 "unchanged" records were related to any existing records. Then I performed the Import. Same response:

    Import complete.

    Asset Tag Upload (E-TEST CMDB)

    Start: 06/20/2012 9:08 AM

    Finish: 06/20/2012 9:12 AM

    Status: Completed

    Records: 1541

    Created: 1534

    Updated: 0

    Unchanged: 7

    Rejected: 0

OK, no problerm...we're getting closer. Next I performed a search by selecting the CI Types under the CI Types tab in the CMDB Search. On the Attributes tab I selected Last Edit Date/Time is today 6/20/2012 and received no Results. I even tried a date before today but I deduced prior to trying it that I would get no Results since it was a new CMDB.

Strange.  What version of FootPrints Service Core is this?

Can you provide screenshots of the search criteria as well as one of the CI's details page?

Great, thanks.  Can you send me the details of a CI that you imported?  I just want to see some of the attributes.

Also, can you look at the System Log under Administration | System | Logs to see if you are getting a Database Error 203 on the ciSearch.pl script?

    Thanks,

Sure, no problem. I appreciate you helping me out.

No 203 errors in the System Logs for any day.

    Thanks.

I just tested uploading 1 record into my existing CMDB and if I left the "last edit date/time is 6/20/2012", I too got no results.  I think we're missing the time component.

Can you try putting a time in your on or before filter?

    Thanks Michael!

I tried with the time using "on or before" and get the same blank screen. When I use the "on or after" as you did in your query I get every record...not just the "unchanged" records.

    Strange.

Do you have a test instance of version 11.1 that you could try this on?  If not, I would recommend contacting tech support to see if they can turn on debugging to find out what's going on.

Hey Michael...yes, I do have a Development Server with 11.1 loaded on it. Trying it now. Will report back with the findings. Thanks for suggesting it.

OK...very strange...but 11.1 is more strange than 11.0.3. I get no records returned when I simply click on the "Home" link after I've performed the upload. When I perform a specific search I get no records as well...but here's the thing...when I click the CSV button after performing that specific search I get a spreadsheet full of stuff...even though it doesn't display on the screen.

So now I'm trying the search on 11.0.3 and when I get no records returned I'll click the CSV button to see what ends up in the spreadsheet.

    Nope...nothing. So I'm back where I started.

It appears 11.1 is different thsan 11.0.3...not in design but in what is rendered even when choosing the exact same criteria when having the exact same CMDB loaded with the exact same CIs.
