Knowledge Base Optimization

Anyone using the FootPrints knowledgebase and if so, any optimization

suggestions? Especially for keyword searches. We have been benchmarking and so

far the search times are slow. Below is what we are seeing as compared to our

current provider. This is searching against 450 articles and will eventually

search against 1400.

 

We compared to other  college and universities FootPrints KB's and their ranges were between 1.7 seconds and 3 seconds accross all browsers with anywhere from 300 articles to 720.

    We have the same problem.  We went to RightAnswers for other reasons, but we continue to have slow search times for issues in FootPrints.

     

    One of our workspaces is still using FootPrints KB instead of RightAnswers, and it has 1055 solutions.  I did some testing (20 searches with a wide variety of number of search results), and I came up with the following numbers:

    I was unable to get numbers for Firefox in OS X because the Mozilla download server was down the afternoon I did this.

     

    The numbers aren’t exactly scientific, since the tests were being run at different times of the day in a production environment, and the server may have been busier at one time than another.  However, hopefully it gives us a general idea.

    In FP 11, there is a new tab for workspace admins to select which fields to search against in a keyword search. By default everything in Issues and the Address Book is selected. We removed all but 6 (Title, Customer Note, Tech Notes, Device Name [Asset Core], Last Name, and  User ID) and search times improved signficantly.

     

    Before this, we were seeing 10 - 30 and at times 2 minute response times. After removing the majority of fields, we are now seeing 4 - 10 second results. We have a lot of tickets and solutions the system has to search against and this change made a signficant improvement. Still not as fast as our current product, but we are getting closer.
