Is it legal to install and run arserver in a (non-production) machine just with the Demo license?

    Hi!

It is very legal to run arserver since the Demo license will just expire after a month.

    Cheers

    Hi,

that's true but i am not sure if the trial license is valid for 1 month. I think it is valid for 90 days, 3 months. you will get the exact information  while downloading the trial license from bmc support website.

If the support id is valid then you can download the trial licenses and use it in test / dev environments.

    thanks.

What if we dont apply any trial license and just run it with the Demo user id with the default 3 fixed licenses ?

All the functionalities may not work in that case. Apart from that there are limitations like only 2000 records can be created per form and no more licenses can be applied.

Also, note that  while installing Atrium CMDB and ITSM applications minimum 15 Fixed licenses are required per application, otherwise the installer does not allow you to proceed.

    thanks.

Actually isn't it required (15 fixed) only if you install the "test / Demo data" from ITSM?

    Hi Laurent,

yes, the installer comes up with  a error that 15 fixed user licenses were not detected. These are application licenses and not AR USer fixed licenses. So, if you wish to install Incident management application then you will need to add 15 Incident Management User fixed licenses then you require a valid AR System license (Trial / Full).

have you expirienced a different behaviour..?

    thanks.

I never tried to install CMDB or ITSM without licensing the ARS server actually so I couldn't say

The only times I installed without licences was with SSI which doesn't care if you enter a licence or not at install stage since it's a database "restore".

    Hi,

Just because there is no technical limit, does not make it "legal".

If you have a valid support contract on the blue model, you can have as many servers you like installed, and you should be able to use them for whatever purpose with the same user base. The exception is Floating licenses of any kind, they must be purchased for each and every server (group) they are used on.

To me, a licensed or unlicensed demo-/test-machine can be used for demos, or to test something before you buy or put it into production. For example a staging server you need running until you switch your users from your old production machine.

Neither the unlicensed demo server, or the licensed test server should be used as a development server. This may not be an issue if you are on the blue license model.

It would be nice to have cheap/free "legal" development-licenses if you are a consultant or contractor, without being a partner, right!? Without us there would be less license revenue for BMC anyway...

Indeed, pretty much like a MSDN program.

I don't count the number of VMs I made since I'm working on Remedy (1 year and a half) to test stuff...

    Hi,

The old model was called "green", and in this model you bought server licenses for Apps as well as the AR Server, DSO, Migrator, etc etc. If you wanted multiple servers, you bought separate licenses for those.

All recent customers are on "blue", and after conversion most older customers as well. This means the you pretty much only pay for user-license Fixed/Floating, and you buy the licenses in various bundles including access to all (suite) or some applications (one Service Desk Floating gives you one Incident Floating, one Problem Floating and one AR User Floating license). If you want 2 server-group servers for production, one test server and one development server, you do not need to pay extra for these.

So in 90% of the cases (or so I would imagine), the newer "blue" license model is what matters.

My own company RRR are on the "green" model, as we have been unable to get any feasible quotes for converting to the newer license model...

Just to clarify, that statement is correct for fixed licenses.  Fixed licenses are considered "site" licenses and can be used across multiple instances if assigned to the same human being (and thus same login name).

Floating licenses are not site licenses and cannot be used on multiple instances, even if accessed by the same human being.  If you have a production instance and a development instance, and are using floating licenses, you would need two floating licenses - one for production and one for dev - for the same person.  Of course, that floating license could be used by other people as well (which is the value of a floating license) in either production or dev.

    Thanks,

    Hi David,

    One question.

If you have a server-group, and buy 10  floating licenses, you are allowed to apply these 10 license on all servers in the group, right? I would think that the same would go for a hot or cold standby server as well?
