1. BPPM 8.6.02 Data Collection Host - What is it for?
Hal DeVoreMar 7, 2012 11:02 AM (in response to Gordon James)
Gordon,
The BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host is a dedicated computer used to collect metric data from devices in virtual machine monitors, and to send the data to BMC ProactiveNet Server for analysis. Collected data includes CPU usage, memory usage, and data that is specific to the host operating system.
It is a special packaging of the BPPM ProactiveNet Agent, the BPPM Integration Service, PATROL Agents, and the BPPM for Virtual Services KM along with some automation.
It is a part of the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management product.

As I understand it (I'm not a "cloud guy"), the DCH Host installer is run from the BPPM server and installs all the components on a "remote" VM, i.e., not the VM where the BPPM server lives.

As Hal mentions the DCH is typically a dedicated host on which a pre-configured integration service used to collect VM Ware data is installed. You can accomplish the same thing by installing your own integration service where you want and configuring it to collect VM Ware data. I agree that the DCH documentation is not clear on what it is and when to install it.

Brian Morris Mar 8, 2012 1:10 PM (in response to Thad White)1 of 1 people found this helpfulTo follow up on the answers already given and the error screenshot given -
The DCH is a dedicated server running 1-3 PATROL agents each with the Virtual Servers KM. The purpose of it is to have a simplified package to rollout the monitoring for vCenter in a BMC CLM environment. During the install process, it asks a series of questions and then integrates with BladeLogic to autoconfigure the PATROL agents and KM's. It is launched from the BPPM server (hence the error screen above complaining about not finding BPPM) and at install time you "point" it to install on the DCH server. In order for this to be successful, the target machine needs to have a BladeLogic agent installed.
For a standard BPPM deployment, this will not be deployed. It is only deployed in the CLM usecase, as Hal has pointed out.

Brian Morris May 1, 2012 10:53 AM (in response to Ramanathan NameToUpdate)Yes the SNMP adapter is a standard offering and is deployed with the BPPM agent. Under the covers it is the same mcxa process and files that you are used to seeing. SNMP versions 1-3 are supported.
