Hello

This is about the "JARCurrencyDefault.jar" tool, as documented here:

Manually setting the default currency field - BMC Remedy IT Service Management Suite 9.1 - BMC Documentation

It's the officially recommended way of adding new currencies to all currency-fields across a Remedy / ITSM application.

This tool does the following things:

##################

This utility is used to add currency codes to existing currency fields

Often when localizing AR System applications, additional locale-specific currency support is needed.

The 2 things that need to be done are to:

- add more currency/precision pairs to the list of allowable and functional currencies for currency fields

- set the default value for currency fields

JavaDefaultCurrency operates on all of the currency fields of a set of named forms, doing 1 or both of these 2 tasks.

##################

(copy/pasted from the info it gives you when you start it via command-line)

The problem I have with this tool is that it does all its modifications on the BASE forms, not as Overlay.

This becomes a problem when you run an upgrade of the Remedy / ITSM environment. All forms modified by the JARCurrencyDefault tool are still labeled as "unmodified" and therefore the modifications get overwritten and the currencies you added are gone afterwards.

Please let me know if I'm understanding this wrong, but the way I see it, this is bad, since it goes against the recommended best practice of making additions/modifications to forms/fields as overlay in order to make sure future upgrades will run smoothly.

Here's a statement received from BMC's support in regards to this matter:

#####################

We discussed this case during a meeting with engineering. The JARCurrencyDefault Tool was originally developed before overlays existed. It has been updated since then to be more overlay aware but, as you have seen, doesn't provide the functionality you describe. As far as we can tell there is no reason behind this, it just hasn't been done.

This would not be considered a defect but would qualify as an RFE. As such we suggest you raise it as an 'Idea' on the BMC communities site so that R&D can comment and keep track of it and other customers can add their support for the idea.

#####################

I'd like to request that the JARCurrencyDefault tool creates overlays for all of its modifications.

Thanks!
