How To Enable DCOM

    DCOM (Distributed Component Object Model) is the protocol used by the Black Boxes and AppSight Analysis consoles to establish a communication channel with the AppSight Repository Server. In order to operate the Black Box in a distributed mode, you must ensure that DCOM is enabled on the server machine and on each Black Box machine.

    To Enable DCOM by using DCOMCnfg.exe:

    1. From the Windows Taskbar, click Start -> Run.

    2. Type DCOMCnfg.exe.

    3. Click OK.

    4. The DCOM Configuration dialog appears depending on the which operating system the user is running:

      • On Windows XP and Win2003, the Component Services dialog box appears. Expand the “Component Services” folder; expand the “Computers” folder. Select “My Computer” and from the right-click menu select Properties. The DCOM Configuration Properties dialog will appear.





      • On Windows NT and Windows 2000, the DCOM Configuration Properties dialog box appears on the DCOMCnfg command.



    5. Select the Default Properties tab.

    6. Select Enable Distributed COM on this computer



    To Enable DCOM by using the Registry Editor:

    The DCOM status is determined by the following registry key:


    The String value (Y/N) switches on/off DCOM on the machine.


    1. From the Windows Taskbar, click Start -> Run.

    2. Type Regedit.

    3. Click OK.

    4. In the Registry Editor navigate to:


    5. Set the value  of the EnableDCOM key to Y

    6. Close the Registry Editor.

    Note: It may be required to reboot the computed in order to apply the modifications


    DCOM on WIN 95/98

    DCOM is not installed on Win9X operating systems.You will need to install the appropriate version of DCOM for Windows.

    1. Install DCOM 9X

    • On WIN 95 - Install DCOM95 ver 1.3 or later
    • On WIN 98 - Install DCOM98 ver 1.3 or later

    2. Install the DCOM configuration utility (dcm95cfg.exe) for 95/98.

    3. Run DCOMcnfg.exe as indicated above. DCOMCnfg.exe is located in \WINDOWS\SYTEM directory.
