    Track-It! 11.x - How to move/copy Track-It from one server to another Part 2

To move or copy Track-It! and/or its database to another server, a backup set is created and then restored to the new server(s). The exact steps will depend on what exactly is being moved.

    Pre-Setup Instructions:

The following tasks should be completed before creating a backup set of the existing installation:

Install the same version of Track-It! on the new server
(If you are   ONLY moving the Track-It! database to a new server, this step is not needed).

NOTE: Windows 2012 and SQL Server 2012 are only supported for use with Track-It! 11.x.

Newer versions can be downloaded in your Product Downloads area.

Important!: It is important to install the same version that you are currently running. During installation, be sure to use your existing Track-It! license file (  trackit.lic). The   trackit.lic license file can be copied from your existing   ..\Track-It! Server directory.

    1. If any add-ons, such as Web Survey or Track-It! Web are installed on the original Track-It! server, make sure to install those same updates and/or add-ons on the new server as well.
    2.
    3. During installation, you will be required to create a new blank database either on an existing SQL server, or by allowing the installer to setup an instance of SQL Express. This blank database can be deleted once the move is complete.
    4.
    5. Download the attached batch file that will assist with the move/copy process:

      1. Download the attached zip file containing a batch file that will be used to complete the backup and restore process.
      2.
      3. Extract the CopyOrMove.bat file to any location on the existing Track-It! server.
      4.
      5. If Track-It! is being moved to another server, extract the CopyOrMove.bat file to any location on the new Track-It! server as well.
      6.
    6.
    7. Install Prerequisites (64-bit Servers Only)

NOTE: Install the following files in the order shown below on the 64-bit Track-It! server(s):

    • These prerequisites are only needed if the Track-It! server(s) are running a 64-bit operating system.
    •
    • If you are going to install these on Windows Server 2012, you must make sure that the .NET Framework 3.5 Feature (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) is installed in Add Roles and Features.
    •
    • If ONLY moving the database, these prerequisites only need to be installed on the original Track-It! application server.
    •
    • If you are moving the Track-It! server applications, these prerequisites need to be installed on BOTH the original and new Track-It! application server (again only on the server(s) that are running 64-bit operating systems).
    •
    • Although these installers reference SQL Server 2008, these files have nothing to do with the actual database server, or version of Microsoft SQL Server that is in use by Track-It! and are required in order to run the backup and restore process on the Track-It! server(s).

How to create a backup set of the existing Track-It! server configuration, database, or both

NOTE: A backup set consists of one or more folders named   Components and/or   Database, in addition to a   BackupSet.properties file. The entire backup set is contained in a folder named like   Track-It! Backup yyyymmddhhmmss

Important!: If it exists, be sure to create a backup copy of the   WOATTACH folder under the   ..\Track-It! Server folder. This folder contains all system attachments if a Migration from Track-It! 7 or earlier had been done at some point in the past. After moving the installation to another server, this folder may need to be restored from the copy or else the attachments will be lost. Please see Knowledge Article   Backup set created by TI.exe doesn't include attachments if Migration from a previous version had ever been done for more information.

If the WOATTACH folder does not exist under ..\Track-It! Server, the files are stored elsewhere and nothing needs to be done to make sure they are copied to the new server.

    1. On the original Track-It! server, double-click to run the CopyOrMove.bat file.
    2.
    3. After reading the introduction, press any key to continue.
    4.
    5. Press B to begin the backup steps.
    6.
    7. Next, press the key corresponding to the type of backup to perform:

      • (F)ull - Backup the Track-It! server configuration and database.
      •
      • (D)atabase - Only backup the Track-It! database.
      •
      • (C)omponents - Only backup the Track-It! server configuration.
      •
    8.
    9. On the next screen, take note of the location where the backup set will be created. By default, the backup set will be created in the ..\Track-It! Server\Backup directory. Press any key to continue.
    10.
    11. If a database backup is being done, enter the password for the TRACKIT80_x database user account and then press ENTER. The default password is shown.
    12.
    13. Press any key to start the backup. If an error occurs, the Track-It-TI.log file will appear. Scroll to the bottom to review any logged errors.
    14.
    15. Once the backup has completed, press any key to exit the batch file.

How to move/copy Track-It! server configuration, database, or both to one or more servers

NOTE: A backup set consists of one or more folders named   Components and/or   Database, in addition to a   BackupSet.properties file. The entire backup set is contained in a folder named like   Track-It! Backup yyyymmddhhmmss

Restoring a FULL backup set to one or more servers (Track-It! server configuration and database)

    1. Copy the entire backup set folder (i.e. Track-It! Backup yyyymmddhhmmss) to the following directory on the NEW application server:

    1. On the new Track-It! server, double-click to run the CopyOrMove.bat file.
    2.
    3. Press R to begin the restore steps.
    4.
    5. On the next screen, the location where the backup set should exist is displayed. Make sure ONLY the backup set you plan to use exists in this location, and then press any key.
    6.
    7. Next, you will be asked to restore to an existing installation of SQL on the same server, or if you would like to change the destination database server (if the database is included in the backup set). Press O to use the local installation of SQL Server, or press C to change to specify a different SQL server.

      Important!

    • Make sure to uninstall the existing installations of Technician Client and reinstall them from the new Track-It! server share (i.e. \\%NewServerName%\TrackIt\Installers\TechnicianClient\en\setup.exe).
    •
    • Make sure to disable the Track-It! Service Management service on the old server, or uninstall Track-It! to avoid the possibility of some technicians still connecting to the old server.
