Client Management agent logging configuration

Version 2

Often, when working on an issue with technical support, the support agent will request log files from affected agents with additional logging detail enabled. This level of logging detail can be enabled in a few ways, which are each described below (the result of each of these processes is the same, so please use whichever is easiest for you).

Enabling additional logging, and viewing logs through the Asset Core console

    1. On the left side of the Asset Core console window, locate the device you would like to enable additional logging for under either Device Topology, or Device Groups. Please note that the device MUST be active (active devices will appear with a green icon).
    2. Expand the device, expand Agent Configuration, and then click Logging.
    3. On the right side of the console window, double click any line to open the Properties window.
    4. Within this window, change the Displayed Types setting to "*" (without the quotes), and then click OK.
    5. Ensure that the Enable List value is "*" as well.
    6. If you are enabling this logging detail to diagnose an issue related to performance, or Auto Discovery, please skip to step 8.
    7. Set the Disable List value to "Autodiscovery".
    8. The log file can be viewed on the Log File tab on the right side of the Asset Core console.
    9. To revert the logging level back to default, follow steps 1-6 once more, changing the Displayed Types setting to "Error,Audit" (note that there is no space between the comma and the word Audit), and clearing the Disable List field.

Enabling additional logging by editing a configuration file on the device

NOTE: This method must be used if the device cannot communicate with its parent.

    1. On the device, go to the folder containing the Asset Management Platform agent files (by default this will be C:\Program Files\BMC Software\FootPrints Asset Core\Client\)
    2. Within this folder, open the \config\mtxagent.ini file in any text editor (such as Notepad).
    3. In this INI file, search for "EnableTypes=" (within Notepad Edit > Find will open the find dialog box).
    4. Change the "EnableTypes=" line to read EnableTypes=*
    5. Next, find the "EnableList=" line and ensure that it reads EnableList=*
    6. If you are enabling this logging detail to diagnose an issue related to performance, or Auto Discovery, please skip to step 8.
    7. Locate the "DisableList=" line and set it to DisableList=Autodiscovery.
    8. The log file will be available in the agent directory under \logs\mtxagent.log
    9. To revert the logging level back to default, follow steps 1-6 once more, changing the "EnableTypes" line to EnableTypes=Error,Audit (note that there is no space between the comma and the word Audit), and clearing the value from the DisableList line.

Using an Operational Rule to enable additional logging

NOTE:This operational rule contains steps which require the Software Distribution capability to be included in your installed license. If our technical support team has requested logs with additional detail, and your current license does not include the Software distribution feature, please request an evaluation license from your support representative.

    1. Download the Agent Logging.xml file attached to this document
    2. In the Asset Core console, click File > Import, and browse for this XML file.
    3. After importing, the rule will most likely appear under Global Settings > Lost and Found. If so, please copy/paste the rule to the Operational rules node.
    4. Once the rule has been moved to the Operational Rules node, you can assign devices as you would with any other rule.
