    QUESTION:

    A customer is requesting a report with a list of Hosts grouped by MS Internet Explorer version. However, many hosts do not have MS Internet Explorer in the Packages List, even though this software is installed.

    How does Discovery find information about Windows packages?

    ANSWER:

    Legacy ID:KA430442

    The getPackageList method uses these registry keys to find package information (see Administration > Platforms > Windows in the UI):

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\*\DisplayName
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\*\QuietDisplayName
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\*\HiddenDisplayName
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\*\DisplayVersion
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\*\Publisher (for manufacturer)
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall (32-bit application data on 64-bit Windows)

    Package information is obtained by walking these registry keys rather than using Win32_Product as it provides more reliable data. On 64 bit Windows systems, the Wow6432Node (32 bit application data) is also examined.

    example:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Adobe Flash Player ActiveX]
    "DisplayName"="Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX"
    "DisplayVersion"="10.0.22.87"
    "Publisher"="Adobe Systems Incorporated"

    Note: The HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall key is not documented in the ADDM 10.x UI.
