    QUESTION:

When a variable contains information that will define an action, how do I use that variable value in a rule ?

    ANSWER:

Let's assume that an automation process sets a variable , call it MYACTION, with a different value based on the environment or any specific situation. It is also important to identify the originating job, to do so we use &IMFOJOB to create a unique variable.

In this case, the variable is set to DUMP or NODUMP.

    set varaible

An alert is created to inform about the condition (note the second Word) :

    Alert1

and we escalate this alert down after 1 minute

    alert2

In the rule where we trap the ESC event, for this ALERT we need to know if this job can be cancelled with DUMP or NODUMP, we do.

    ESC_ALERT

Remember that the second Word of the alert contains the name of the saved variable.

    VAL

using the function VALUE, in our case we can test it against the keyword DUMP and then take the required action.
