SVOS either displays messages that NOCATLG2 cannot locate a control block and then appears to hang, or SVOS immediately ends with an SVC Dump referencing COSSR230 or COSSR100.

    PRODUCT:

    MainView SRM Allocation

    COMPONENT:

    MainView SRM Allocation

    APPLIES TO:

MainView SRM Allocation 7.9.00 or MainView SRM StopX37/II 7.9.00 or MainView SRM Reporting 7.9.00 or MainView SRM Enterprise Storage Automation (ESA) 7.9.00

    QUESTION:

After installing or upgrading the RSL level on 7.9.00 MainView SRM the SVOS started task does one of the following; why?

    • end immediately with an SVC Dump referencing COSSR230
    •
    • end immediately with an SVC Dump referencing COSSR100
    •
    • generates SVC dumps after messages indicating NOCATLG2 cannot locate a control block
    •
    • normal messaging stops and the STC will not respond to commands.

    ANSWER:

    Cause:

SVOS started task for release 7.9.00 may fail or become unresponsive when running on a CPU that does not support the z/Architecture facilities needed.  If this issue occurs during SVOS initialization, then other components will not start and SVOS might need to be forced down.
Recent SPEs require z/Architecture facilities available with a minimum CPU model of z196 introduced in 2010.

Note: the examples given are those that Customers have experienced, there may be other CPU model/PTF combinations that would result in different symptoms.

    Work-Around:
Customers may choose to continue to run release 7.8.00 on z9 and z10 systems through 2020, though the hardware is no longer supported by IBM.  7.8.00 will go on limited support when the next release of MV/SRM is GA.

Customers who were already running 7.9.00, and experienced one of the issues described or similar, after applying maintenance, may want to fall back to the maintenance level they were running successfully before the maintenance application.

Customers using z9 or z10 hardware will not be able to run 7.9.00 with any of the following PTFs applied:   BPG7626, BPG7696, BPG7721, BPG7746.  Some Customers are successfully running 7.9.00 with RSL1807, without adding the previously mentioned PTFs.

Customers running on z9 or z10 hardware, who are contemplating applying maintenance to their 7.9.00 installation, may consult with BMC Support about questions they may have.
