    QUESTION:

SMS managed datasets are allocating to a volume outside of the ACS assigned storage group

    ANSWER:

In the MainView SRM Reference Manual, under the description for global variable SPACPRIMACS, there is a table of ACS read-only variables, which, if present in the ACS routines, can result in ACS picking the wrong storage class which in turn can cause the wrong storage group to be selected by our code.

ACS variable &ANYVOL is an additional ACS read-only variable that MainView SRM cannot populate and should have been included in the table mentioned above (we will make this change to our manual).  The reason why we cannot populate it is because there is no corresponding ACEROxxx field in IBM DSECT IGDACERO.

To correct this problem, global variable SPACPRIMACS needs to be set to NO in SMMSYSXX.

Since there can be performance implications when function SPACPRIM is invoked with SPACPRIMACS set to NO, there is another option. Use function SMSSELCT to assign a volume from the desired storage group. Global variable SPACPRIMACS is ignored by SMSSELCT.
