Statement of Direction: TrueSight Smart Reporting for Server Automation.
BMC will continue to invest in reporting capabilities for TrueSight Server Automation and have developed a replacement offering with migration path.
TrueSight Server Automation is standardizing on YellowFin as its reporting solution of choice. It is already used in the "Live Reporting" capabilities introduced in TSSA v8.9 and will now be extended to support the historical reporting needs as well. This approach will provide customers a consolidated experience for both real time and historical reporting needs.
The replacement offering is called TrueSight Smart Reporting for Server Automation which will be available on May 1st 2019.
Frequently asked questions
What advice can BMC offer with regards to the change in reporting offerings?
Customers are advised to continue to utilize BMC Decision Support – Server Automation until the solution is end of life at the end of August 2019.
A replacement offering will be introduced on May 1st 2019 and license migrations for those with active support contracts will be available, in accordance with your current annual maintenance spend. Customers are encouraged to access the replacement offering at their earliest convenience to become familiar with the technology before the switch is finally made.
How & when can I access the new reporting solution?
The release of TrueSight Server Automation for Servers is planned for May 1st 2019. BMC will send proactive notifications to BMC Decision Support customers on the release date. Customers can then contact their BMC account manager to execute the license migration process. Once you are licensed for the new TrueSight Smart Reporting for Servers solution, you will be able to access and download the required components from BMC's Electronic Product Download (EPD) site.
The two components required are:
- TrueSight Smart Reporting for Server Automation: This contains the YellowFin Reporting solution and is located on its own EPD page. You will only be able to see this EPD product page once you are licensed for it.
- TrueSight Server Automation - Data Warehouse: (TSSA-DW) This is the data warehouse and ETL process required for storing and summarizing the server automation historical data. This component can be accessed from the BMC Decision Support for Server Automation 8.9 EPD page under the "patches tab".

Will the replacement offering have all the same OOB report templates?
Yes, all of the OOB report templates available with BMC Decision Support for Server Automation will be recreated and made available with TrueSight Smart Reporting to Server Automation. However the initial release will only have a subset of reports with a follow on release completing the set. The OOB reports supported in the May 1st release include:
- Command Usage reports
- Inventory reports
- Patch reports
- Job Activity Reports
The remaining report types will be delivered via a patch in the summer 2019.
I have created custom reports in BMC Decision Support / Cognos, is there any way to migrate or convert them to YellowFin?
Unfortunately there are no conversion utilities available, so custom reports will need to be recreated in YellowFin once you have migrated.
Is the new solution still licensed based on numbers and types of users?
No, the replacement offering is an enterprise license which has no limits to the numbers of users accessing it.
I have injected custom data into the BMC Decision Support data schema, can I continue to generate reports that include this data?
Yes the replacement solution offers the ability to extend the reporting data schema to add additional data into reports.This functionality will be available via a patch which should be delivered within a few weeks of the replacement offering being released.
Will BMC Decision Support continue to be validated with later versions of TrueSight Server Automation?
Yes, BMC Decision Support - Server Automation will continue to work with later versions of TrueSight Server Automation up until its end of support date in August 2019.
Can I run both BMC Decision Support and the replacement offering in parallel whilst I migrate?
This is possible but unsupported due to the potential risk of data loss should a customer attempt to run ETL from more than one place. Customers may use the following instructions at their own risk:
Instructions for installing TrueSight Server Automation-Data Warehouse (TSSA-DW) with an existing BDSSA master database on different machine:
- Ensure BDSSA is up and running on one machine.
- Make sure all ETL/Archival Scheduled Jobs are stopped.
- Install TSSA-DW on a different machine and provide the existing Master DB details during TSSA-DW post install configuration steps
- Change the parameters in ETL/Archival Jobs in TSSA as per new TSSA-DW host/Update ETL_HOME paths.
- Enable the schedules in TSSA for above Jobs.
- ETL/Archival should run successfully on TSSA-DW setup.
- Please note If by mistake, you run ETL from BDSSA Machine the ETL will now give error saying “Run ETL/Stop ETL/Set CutOff ETL is not allowed from BladeLogic Decision Support For Server Automation(BDSSA). Please execute ETL/Stop ETL/Set CutOff ETL from TrueSight Server Automation - Data Warehouse(TSSADW).”
- User can now login to Cognos in BDSSA and can see the updated data in reports because underlying databases are same which are used in TSSA-DW.
- User can also login to TrueSight Smart Reporting for Server Automation in TSSA-DW and view reports.
Will the new solution work with older versions of TrueSight Server Automation?
The new reporting solution will only work with versions of TSSA 8.9x or above.
I have a lot of historical data in my existing BMC Decision Support – Server Automation database. Can I migrate this data to the new offering?
Yes, customers with existing BMC Decision Support databases can retain their existing databases to preserve the long term data.
Is there any time limit as to when I can migrate my BMC Decision Support licenses over to the new open reporting offering?
Customers with active support contracts for BMC Decision Support – Server Automation can migrate licenses to the new offering as soon as it is available (May 1st 2019). You can migrate at any time, so long as you have an active support contract for BDSSA.
Can I continue to use BMC Decision Support – Server Automation even after the product is officially end of life / end of support?
We recommend customers uninstall BMC Decision Support – Server Automation after it runs out of support at the end of August 2019 and migrate to the new offering instead. Any installed instances of BMC Decision Support – Server Automation post Aug 2019 will be unsupported.
