    QUESTION:

    I have devices that do not appear to have hardware or software inventory, how can I locate these?

    ANSWER:

    A free query can be used to find these devices. This can be created with the following steps:

    1. Under the Queries node, create a new Query for locating the devices with inventory and title it "Devices without Hardware or Software Inventory" or something similar that identifies it for you.
    2. After Naming the query, make sure to Check the box for "Free Query" and then click ok:

    create query properties highlighting the free query check box

    3. On The SQL Tab paste in the following query:

    select distinct devicename
    from devices
    where deviceid not in
    (
    SELECT devices.deviceid
    FROM InventoryIntegrationData, Devices
    WHERE InventoryIntegrationData.DeviceID=Devices.DeviceID
    AND TopologyType != '_DB_DEVTYPE_RETIRED_'
    AND (Status !='_STATUS_LICENSECOUNTREACHED_' OR Status IS NULL)
    AND InventoryType = 'SoftwareInventory'
    )

    OR

    deviceid not in
    (
    SELECT devices.deviceid
    FROM InventoryIntegrationData, Devices
    WHERE InventoryIntegrationData.DeviceID=Devices.DeviceID
    AND TopologyType != '_DB_DEVTYPE_RETIRED_'
    AND (Status !='_STATUS_LICENSECOUNTREACHED_' OR Status IS NULL)
    AND InventoryType = 'HardwareInventory'
    )

    4. Click the Verify SQL button in the toolbar, followed by the Save SQL button to verify the syntax of the query and then save it:

    5. After saving the sql query, set the Query status to Active:

    Once the query is active you can click on the Preview tab to see devices. It can then be used in dynamic groups by right clicking on the query and selecting create devicegroup:

    The query can also be used in style based reports if needed.
