    QUESTION:

How is the URI/location different in remote references?

    ANSWER:

    What is a remote reference?
A remote reference is a link to a file or folder located in a data center on a remote server. The content of such a file or folder is not pulled into your local database during instance creation.
    Doc link: https://docs.bmc.com/docs/display/brpd50/Remote+reference

When you select the remote reference dropdown on the BRPD UI, the URI or location gets a new Server tag.
For example in a file method without remote reference:

      User-added image

Now when you select the remote reference dropdown, the URI/Location is updated and the server tag is added to it.

      User-added image

While changing an existing reference to enable remote reference, you have to make sure that you are updating the URI/Location accordingly, or else, the deployment will fail.
