Being a wearer of glasses myself, want to make sure I find the owner of these lovely specs.

Email me if you lost these prescriptive stunners at our Engage Conference and I'll have them sent out immediately.

In one of the events, meet the engineers I think, the TrueSight Capacity Optimization group gave Rubik's Cubes.  I accepted the challenge and took one to solve.  While I attempted a dozen or so years ago, and failed, now I could stand to try again. With a little help from YouTube, I solved one for the first time after two days (not continuous effort), then again in two hours, then again in 20 minutes.

Now I can solve one in less that 10 minutes with only a little helper note.

And this is how BMC Engage2016 made me a better person.

Take 30 seconds and post a selfie video...Tell us why you're going to Engage 2016.

By the time we see each other, walking into the Aria Resort & Casino with our orange conference badges and breaking in our new Engage backpacks we might not remember to ask the question... Why Engage?

I thought it would be interesting to hear your input pre-conference as opposed to just getting your feedback post conference (btw, thank you to all of you that gave us your comments at the end of Engage 2015, I read every comment and tried to keep them in mind as we designed this years agenda and activities).  So let’s have a little fun as we share our reasons for attending this year’s global user conference, we’re going to recognize the top four BMC Community members between now and August 15, 2016 (sorry no BMC employees and please check the T&Cs for contest rules).  Top performance is based on the quantity of posts, number of views, number of engagements, etc. in the Community which is reflected in the leaderboard.   Make sure to post a document in BMC Engage Community.

Here’s what you need to do to qualify to win:

  • Post a brief video of yourself in the BMC Engage Community and “Tell Us Why” you’re attending BMC Engage 2016 this September.

  • Then continue to post your comments, ideas, related materials, session promotions by speakers, and other food for thought that will help start the conversations now... before we get to Las Vegas.  We’ll track your posts in the BMC Engage Community.

  • If you haven’t gotten around to registering yet, you need to by August 15, 2016... Why?  Because of the prize!

Top four members who have the highest level of activity in BMC Engage Community (limited to USA and Canada only, excluding Quebec) will be awarded 1 night of accommodations at the Aria Resort & Casino, Las Vegas. This is only valid for your stay during the BMC Engage 2016 conference Sept 6-9thContest rules can be accessed here.

Doug Mueller, BMC Fellow, got on camera recently to speak directly to you, our Remedy customers and partners.  He feels so strongly about the technical resources that is being built into all the elements of this year's conference that he just wanted to tell you... this is the ITSM event you don't want to miss.

Attend BMC Engage 2016 and take advantage of three days of access to our brightest and most technical experts and customers.

If you are using BMC Atrium Orchestrator for a couple years, then you would agree that the core strength implementing the solutions comes from the ability to program workflows, which not only consumes data but processes, evaluates, and transforms data and abstracts all the complex interactions with a common data model using XML.

As the world is moving towards RESTful interactions, with almost all of the third-party applications exposing REST APIs, it is inevitable to expect BAO to not just interact with such APIs but be able to work within this ecosystem seamlessly.

BAO’s out-of-the-box adapter such as the HTTP adapter is widely used to invoke REST APIs over HTTP, which uses JSON data format. JSON is not just simple in syntax but also lightweight and therefore has become a de-facto for inter-application communication.

What if we have a third-party application invoke BAO and pass the data in JSON format? That’s perfectly Ok! If it’s a text, so no problem accepting this data, but wait, we still want to leverage the power of BAO’s powerful XML processing engine. We want to consume this data in JSON format but also want to transform the data to some other format, parse it to collect only relevant data but still want to pass it back to the calling application in JSON. Is it possible? Yes, it’s possible with BAO!

All this and much more will be covered in the session I am conducting at BMC Engage.

Attend the - Hands-on Lab LL49 — BMC Atrium Orchestrator - Development Studio BMC Engage, where we will learn how could we consume data as JSON, process it as XML and again transmit it back as JSON.

I like Remedy: I like the way you can relatively easily put together complicated business logic. It allows you to write approval processes, deal with users and permissions, create user interfaces and interact with different applications. Applications are easy to manage and it greatly reduces the complexity.

But as much as I like the business logic, I don’t always like the user interface. Especially on mobile devices. Granted, ITSM comes with its own native mobile apps, but if you write your own Remedy applications and use the web interface, they don’t always look that great when viewed on your phone.

If you know a few things about programming you could, of course, write your own solution: set up a database, write a server-based application, a website that acts as the primary user interface, web services that allow you to communicate and eventually your own mobile app. But that’s a significant amount of work, and suddenly you have to manually manage all of these things that Remedy has been doing for you so well.

android.pngYou see, what I like about Remedy is that it takes away the complexities of writing business logic. As a programmer, it’s not something I want to have to deal with. And that where Remedy shines: your Remedy application will handle all of that business logic and even allows you tap into that. No need to define any web services, it’s all provided, ready to be used.

The REST API is great when you want to develop your own mobile app. It allows you to quickly interact with the Remedy application. It’s simple in its setup but you get a lot done. If your application includes a business process that sends an approval email to a manager, updates various records and creates a new request in some other part of the system, none of that matters to you when you develop your mobile app. You just create a record in an interface form and check it later if it has been updated. That’s all you’re concerned about.

But how do you take advantage of the REST API? How do you get started, how does the REST API work and what would a mobile app look like? To learn more, attend my session, Session 233: Getting the Most out of Your Web Services Integration, at BMC Engage where we’ll be looking at SOAP-based services, REST and what you need to do to get started writing great mobile apps with the power of Remedy.

Hope to see you there,

Justin

Are you new to Control-M Self Service or a seasoned user/admin?  Either way, I hope that you join me during my 2016 BMC Engage presentation on Agile Batch Automation beyond the Data Center.  Why?  Because I love automation and creative solutions that reduce the overhead and workload of our end users (and myself!).  During the presentation, I want to show you how we use Control-M Self Service to enable our developers and business users to dynamically submit batch work on a 24x7 basis.  The techniques that we employ keep us out of the Agile “hold up” lane allow for greater developer control and increased productivity for our business partners.

SLS-Chart.gif

To date we have reduced the adhoc work requests to the IT Operations staff by more than 60% and that number continues to grow.  We have also reduced the workload of the Production Control staff by a similar amount.  I’m sure you are asking how we did this with Control-M Self Service… well I can’t give you all the answers now!  If you are at Engage 2016 this year, please sign up for my live demo of how we utilize the tool for Agile Batch Automation and I’ll see you in September!
