Have you experienced issues with a Gateway that can't connect or have a Gateway download hang? Are you interested in learning more about Gateway architecture and/or how the gateway works? Would you like to learn how you could potentially identify and correct problems yourself?

To learn more about the Gateway architecture and troubleshooting, please join us for a connect with Control-M live webinar on  Wednesday, May 31st  where Neil Blandford will demonstrate:

Gateway Architecture

Debugging & Troubleshooting

•     Running the Health Check Utility

Connect with Control-M: Troubleshooting the Enterprise Manager Gateway - YouTube

Here is the Q&A for this webinar (Connect with Control-M Troubleshooting the Enterprise Manager Gateway)

________________________________________________________________

Q: Is the Control Shell option for gateway something that can be disable for users from authorizations?

A: To prevent unauthorized access to the Configuration Manager use the NONE options in Authorizations for the Configuration Manger.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Will global conditions flow with the gateway down?

A: Not to the Control-M Server that has the Gateway down, the others will.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Will you be able to do job functions like hold with the gateway down?

A: With the Control-M Server utility ctmpsm directly, but the EM Clients systems won't be able to receive Server updates.

________________________________________________________________

Q: If the z/os gateway is up and EM gateway is down, will the z/os ctm server still work?

A: The answer is YES, the same as a distributed server. No global conditions will flow though.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Can I use the ctl to enable debug from my client machine?

A: ctm is an EM Server utility so it has to be run from the server.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Gateway state and desired state are up but the message from CCM is showing as disconnected, what could be the reason?

A: There could be a communication issue or the Server may be down. Please see the demo of this webinar for troubleshooting info.

________________________________________________________________

Q: What happens to alerts if the gtw is down/having problems, and newday runs before the gtw is reconnected? Will alerts issued before newday be lost if the job is no longer on the AJF in the new

download?

A: Alerts along with the new day run will be delayed, but catch up once re-connected.

________________________________________________________________

Q: What steps we need to perform if gateway status goes to No Sync mode during NDP?

A: Firstly, give it time to try to sync. If it still can't please re-cycle and monitor.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Can you initiate the Control Shell commands from the command line / shell on the Control-M EM server? If so, how?

A: Yes, you can use the -cmd option. The utilities guide covers these options.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Is the overhead less or more turning on debug using the command line?

A: There's no difference in overhead provided the modules are the same.

________________________________________________________________

Q: What's the Control-M/EM port?

A: It's configurable but default is 2369.

________________________________________________________________

Q: What is a 'low number' in terms of the updates in the STAT_REPORT?

A: 1 or 2 could be considered low, bear in mind that this is a backlog and dependent on system performance. Ideally this should be 0.

________________________________________________________________

Q: It happened last week at a new date. It took an extra 8 min for folder sync. We couldn't find anything in the logs. How should we troubleshoot this issue if it happens again?

A: Run the EM and Server data collectors, also note if anything was happening at the time. We often see download issues caused by VM backup, migration, or load for example.

________________________________________________________________

Q: If we want merge two different EM in one then how can gateways can be merged?

A: You can check this article solution 000030516 for information about it but feel free to open a case to clarify your needs first

________________________________________________________________

Q: Is it possible to make the gateway to run on a specific port?

A: Yes, you can update the configuration to allow this. Please open a case to discuss.

________________________________________________________________

Q: What's the difference between the gtw_log* and a gtw_diag* files?

A: The gtw_log is the main log, the second is intended for development and support.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Is there a line command to check the status of a Gateway?

A: Yes, you can use: ctl -mcs -C Gateway -d [datacenter] -cmd life_check

________________________________________________________________

Q: Can one gateway connected to 2 different EM's one will be up at a time right?

A: Not, this cause significant problems, this is not a supported configuration.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Do we have a list of frequent issues with Gateway and troubleshooting/resolution summary?

A: We discussed a common scenario in the demo, we tend to deal with gateway issues on a case by case basis.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Do we need to delete gateway when to upgrade EM from 8 to 9 or it will be done by upgrade toolkit?

A: There should not be any need to delete the Server or Gateway after an upgrade, please open an AMIGO case when starting to upgrade to clarify upgrade concerns.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Can you briefly explain the relationship with Control-m 'agents' assigned to Control-M 'servers' and how problems with the gateway could impact your workflow tied to the targeted remote agents?

A: The Agent communicates with the Server only and all communication with the EM Client comes through the Gateway. So if there are problems you will be able to manage them once communication is restored.
