We are very pleased to announce that both BMC Helix Capacity Optimization 20.02 and TrueSight Capacity Optimization 20.02 have been released and they are now available!

The 20.02 release includes enhanced reporting, additional data collection, and improved user experience and more.  Here’s the details for the new capabilities in the 20.02 release.

  • Enhanced reporting capabilities
    • Advanced reporting capabilities using Smart Reporting TrueSight Capacity Optimization now offers a new way to create, administer, and publish custom advanced reports when integrated with TrueSight Smart Reporting. For details on integration, see Integrating with TrueSight Smart Reporting.
    • New Summary Data Mart wizard to create custom data marts
      Using the new Summary Data Mart wizard, you can build a custom data mart to retrieve the data according to your requirements. This simple and easy-to-use wizard allows you to create data marts using the necessary metrics without requiring a knowledge of SQLs. This custom data mart can then be used in a custom view or report. For details, see Creating a summary data mart for a custom view or report.
    • New Chart sizing options available for charts in capacity views 
      You can now maximize or minimize any charts included in capacity views pages. When maximized, the chart is displayed in the full-screen mode. For details, see Managing charts.

· Empowered Service-aware planning with an extended look back and forecasting duration

      You can now extend the forecasted days to saturation analysis window in the Business Services view to 180 days. This can be achieved by leveraging the Use long term data to compute indicators parameter added for the Days to Saturation indicator in the Thresholds page. For details, see Indicators.

  • Improved User Experience
    • Time zone user preferences for Investigate
      The Investigate Tool now allows you to view data in different timezones in investigate studies. This can be achieved using the new options added in the Settings page at the Investigate Study level. For details, see Creating and managing Investigate Studies.
    • Self-help
      Embedded self-help is now available. It provides guided assistance that helps you learn to navigate the product and complete tasks. From the Self-help pane, you can access relevant quick tours, links to documentation help topics, and videos.
    • Display of the Gateway Server hostname on the Configuration page
      When you configure the BMC Client Gateway for the Gateway Server, the Gateway Server hostname is now displayed on the Gateway Server Configuration page and the Manager run log files. For details, see Adding, removing, and inspecting Gateway Server details.

 

  • Simplified Data Access Control
    New Agent Data REST API now available. It does analyze real-time data and historical data to address any capacity and performance issues in your environment. For details, see Agent Data API.

 

  • Extended Coverage for Data Collection
    • Support for Pivotal Cloud Foundry:
      • New ETL to import data from Pivotal Cloud Foundry – Pivotal Cloud Foundry, a unified, multi-cloud platform to manage enterprise applications at scale is now supported. The Pivotal CF - Integrator enables you to extract capacity metrics from both Pivotal Cloud Foundry component VMs and Applications manager. For details, see Integrator for Pivotal CF.
      • New out-of-the-box view for Pivotal Cloud Foundry - The new, out-of-the-box, Pivotal Cloud Foundry view enables you to manage the capacity and efficiency of containerized environment and applications, VMs, and infrastructure level. For details, see Pivotal Cloud Foundry view.
         
    • New ETL to import data from the Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor
      The new Nutanix - Prism API Extractor for AHV ETL enables you to collect configuration and performance data of the Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor entities.

    • ETL module enhancements:
      • k8s data collection updates - Enhanced to support data collection from RedHat Openshift 3.9 to 4.1 and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE)
      • Dynatrace ETL  - enhanced to support Hostname, Dynatrace Entityid and Dynatrace Entityid/Hostname as lookup options in the Dynatrace-Extraction property
      • Enhanced Gateway VIS file parser to support additional metrics such as ability to view estimated CPU utilization for a hyperthreaded system, support timezones for systems and business drivers and better tuning for NUMA parameters

 

    • Extended software support:
      The following ETLs now support new software versions.

  • Enhanced Google cloud support
    • A new out-of-the-box views for Google VM instancesis now available to allow you easily get visibility into capacity utilization and potential bottlenecks in GCP VMs capacity
    • Enhanced ETL modules to import Google data - GCP ETL has been enhanced to support data collection by using a single service account for multiple Google Cloud projects and to collect additional metrics for CPU, disk, and network entities.

 

  • Improved User Experience
    • Enhanced recommendation details  - Recommendations now include details related to criteria used for generating the recommendation, context charts and benefits summary to increase awareness in leveraging those precious actionable information to increase efficiency in your IT infrastructure
    • Datamart import/export - You can now export and import custom data marts and reuse them in multiple environments of TrueSight Capacity Optimization, without having to recreate them; for example, this enhancement can be of help in case of view migration from dev to prod environment
    • Custom rolling statistics creation - The Rolling Statistics tab is added to the Custom statistics page to display the predefined set of entities and metrics for out-of-the-box rolling statistics. You can also create custom rolling statistics for additional metrics to increase flexibility and effectiveness in managing your data
    • Domain filter enhancements - Domain filtering capabilities in capacity views has been enhanced .The domain filter page displays all the domains in your environment with pagination to effectively navigate through the domain pages and easily display the data of your interest
    • Enhancements to custom view templates:
      • Ability to configure the right Y-axis in the charts - You can now customize the metric parameters to enable the metric value to be displayed on the right Y-axis in page view templates including charts
      • Custom data marts can be now used to configure view pages based on Tree Map and Sunburst template
    • Enhanced Kubernetes view - You can now get visibility into Kubernetes pods, controllers, and containers.
    • Simplified Investigate Study creation
    • Enhanced manager run configuration for Gateway Server
    • Support for registering Capacity Agents using the API
    • Enhanced documentation - A new section, Implementing, is added to the documentation. It contains end-to-end use cases for different environments. The use cases describe how you can use TrueSight Capacity Optimization in your environment to meet your capacity management goals.

 

  • Extended Coverage for Data Collection
    • Metrics for Numa systems and HP IVM guests - The Capacity Agent can now collect metrics from Numa systems and additional metrics from HP IVM guests.
    • New ETL to import data from AppDynamics - The new AppDynamics ETL enables you to collect data from AppDynamics, which is an application performance monitoring solution for enterprise technologies and cloud-native environments.
    • Additional data sources for the Business Services view - Business Service view can be now populated also by levearing the integrations with Service Now, Dynatrace and Appdynamics
    • ETL module enhancements:
      • Hitachi Device Manager ETl has been enhanced to support data collection for physical disks
      • k8s data collection updates - Enhanced to support data collection from different Kubenetes controllers, such as Deployment, ReplicationController, ReplicaSet, StatefulSet, and DaemonSet.

  • Simplified Data Access Control
    • Enhanced ETL Development Kit - The ETL Development kit now allows you to modify existing ETL packages and activate or deactivate the packages without using Integration Studio.
    • Restricted access to public APIs - Access to the following public APIs is now restricted. As an administrator, you must provide the read or write permission to users for accessing these APIs.
    • New API key for programmatic access - You can now generate an API key that allows programmatic access to the TrueSight Capacity Optimization functionalities. You can use this key to authenticate users to connect to the TrueSight Capacity Optimization console in the following scenarios: 1) Activating the custom ETL package using the ETL Development Kit (EDK); 2) Calling the public APIs
    • Proxy support for Remote ETL Engine - The Remote ETL engine is enhanced to support proxy server configuration for communication between the Remote ETL Engine scheduler and the Application Server. For enabling the proxy server configuration, an additional screen is added in the AS and ETL Engine installer

We are very pleased to inform you that Version 2.0 of the View Migration Toolkit for TrueSight Capacity Optimization it is now available!

 

The View Migration Toolkit will help you to expedite the process of migrating your custom views from the TrueSight Capacity Optimization console to the TrueSight console.

View Migration Toolkit v2.0 includes the following key features and enhancements:

 

  • Added options to specify the target product version for the TSPS view to create (10.7.01 / 11.0/ 11.3 / 11.5)
  • Added support for Business Driver Data Explorer template (for target versions 11.3+ with latest CHF)
  • Added support for multiple tables in Summary Table template (for target versions 11.3+ with latest CHF)
  • Added support for exporting also custom data marts (in case you need to export from an env and import in another one, useful for testing and debugging)
  • Added advanced options to drive the conversion

We are very excited to announce the release of TrueSight Cloud Cost Control 11.5, the cloud service expense management solution that optimizes costs and utilization for multi-cloud infrastructure services, providing insights and control over operating expenditures and budgets.

 

 

Key new features in TrueSight Cloud Cost Control 11.5 include:

 

  • New workflow to manage savings recommendations and automatically execute saving actions (for AWS)
    • Ability to leverage a supervised workflow to manage resource usage recommendations - As a capacity planner, you can now use the Resource usage page to take appropriate actions on idle VMs and overallocated VMs by reviewing recommendations. You can also decide to ignore the recommendations for example related to your business critical applications or include them in a list of committed recommendations to be shared with the appropriate stakeholders for execution

    • Enhanced support for AWS CloudWatch agent data collection - Simplified process of enabling the Cloud Watch agent on AWS to collect additional metrics for the AWS instances which allows to you to improve efficiency in the AWS cloud resources adoption being able to easily identify disk and memory bottlenecks and plan for memory upgrades and disk expansions to stick with planned budget for AWS resources

Key new features in TrueSight Capacity Optimization 11.5 include:

 

 

  • New Business Service view - With this version, you will easily get visibility into capacity of your business services and service pools. The new Business Service view is a set of executive views displaying business service health from a capacity perspective which brings service-aware capacity planning to both the Capacity Planners as well as Executives, Managers and most importantly, Service Owners. 
Together with the Business Service View we have introduced a new concept called the “Service Pool” which is a group of resources that form an infrastructure or technology layer (tier) within an application or a business service to enable you to execute capacity planning from a consumer perspective rather than the resource provider perspective. These service pools are the foundation of computation for Application/Service tiers and upon which these new views are built.

 

  • New Containerized Capacity Agent - You will be now able to quickly and easily install a capacity agent in a containerized environment. This addition brings a simplified deployment and management of capacity data collection in containerized workflows.

 

  • Enriched Visualization capabilities:
    • Capacity Views Transformation - New and enhanced view pages templates have been included in this release to help you creating and structuring more powerful custom views in the TS Console with a minimal need of programming skills. In particular:
        • New Business Driver Data explorer template provides easy and dynamic visualisation of Business Driver metrics
        • Enhanced Data Mart Explorer template now supports category bar charts bringing more flexible ways to visualize the data leading to deeper insights and the ability to view a breakdown of data grouped by category thanks to category charts addition. Moreover, thanks to support for multi-chart type graphs you will be able visualize data in combined charts such as combine stacked and non-stacked metrics
    • Enhanced web-based Investigate tool - Role-based access control for Investigate study groups is now supported. You can now share your Investigate studies with other users. Administrators can grant access to specific Investigate study groups so that other users can view the associated Investigate studies.

 

  • Enhanced Integrations  - A number of important new and enhanced integrations have been released as part of 11.5 version to expand the coverage for capacity data collection.
    • New integrations:
        • BMC Discovery to allow Service-Aware capacity planning for Discovery users without the need of leveraging a CMDB.You can build business services from discovered entities or import manual groups as business services.You can use this data to analyze capacity at the business service, applications, and service pool levels.
        • ServiceNow, to bring in service topology and business drivers

 

    • Enhanced support for public cloud - Enhanced integration for both AWS and Microsoft Azure has been also included in this version to improve the ability to manage public cloud resources being able to also automatically import related business services details:
        • New support for Azure GovCloud & AWS GovCloud

We are very excited to announce you that TrueSight Cloud Cost Control has been released and it is now available to you!

 

TrueSight Cloud Cost Control is a new cost management solution part of the TrueSight product family. It analyzes current and future costs and utilization of multi-cloud infrastructure services, which gives organizations insight and control over expenses. With a single view of on-premises and public cloud infrastructure spend, they can track and analyze costs and utilization, identify overspending, and forecast future costs.

 

BMC announced TrueSight Cloud Cost Control as one of the new solutions that will help customers in maximizing the benefits of the cloud. Click the following link and watch the replay of the announcement video from BMC at BMC Exchange 2017 - Keynote Presentation.

 

 

Key new features in TrueSight Capacity Optimization 11.0 include ability to:

 

  • Gain visibility into your multi-cloud infrastructure costs
    • Single-pane view of the actual and forecasted multi-cloud costs, at a monthly and yearly level.
    • Out-of-the-box cost reporting views - access summarized and detailed views of the cost comparison between your public cloud providers, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure, and on-premises infrastructure, based on following dimensions: Cloud provider, Cloud service, Business service and Server

 

  • Create customized cloud reports based on business needs - Use the flexible filtering capability to create customized cost reports that can be exported and shared as needed. For example, track the top ten most expensive resources and identify unused resources, idle resources, or all costs and resources for a specific location.

 

  • Simulate the migration of your servers to the public cloud - Use the migration simulation feature to review and analyze the future cost estimates and cost trends of migrating your on-premises servers to the public cloud. This information can help you decide whether you should continue to use your on-premises servers, migrate them to a public cloud, or migrate them from one cloud to another.

Version 3.0 of the View Migration Toolkit for TrueSight Capacity Optimization it is now available! Updated installation package is attached to this page.

With release of TrueSight Capacity Optimization (TSCO) v11.0, as part of the  Capacity Views Transformation process, access to all capacity views (both out-of-the box views and custom views) is only allowed through the TrueSight console UI. For more information about the TrueSight console, see Accessing and navigating the TrueSight console .

 

Thanks to this important change, you will need to migrate your custom views to TrueSight console before upgrading to TSCO v11.0 to be able to continue to use them.

 

Attached here you find a View Migration Toolkit that will help you in migrating your custom views from the TrueSight Capacity Optimization console to the TrueSight console.

 

The View Migration Toolkit v3.0 requires:
  1. The source CO version (the CO instance from which view would be exported) to be TrueSight Capacity Optmization v10.7.01 with latest CHF installed
  2. The target CO version (the CO instance to which view i.e. “.viewpkg” file would be imported which is the result of running view migration tool) to be minimum TrueSight Capacity Optimization v11.5.01 with latest CHF installed

 

 

Migration process overview is displayed in the picture below:

 

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER

  • The View Migration Toolkit is provided “as is” on the Capacity Optimization community, outside the scope of product maintenance and BMC Support.

 

  • Each view generated by the View Migration Toolkit must be intended as only a "skeleton" that could help the migration from pre-11.x views to 11.x views in the TrueSight console. It is expected that user intervention may be required in any of the pages to restore or enhance the view.
    • All the pages of the original view might not be fully migrated; some pages couldhave been partially converted or even not converted at all
    • Not all the features of the original view could have been converted
    • There is no guarantee that the behavior of the previous view is maintained
    • Some pages might need manual configurations to work properly

 

 

To start using the View Migration Toolkit download the attached zip file and un-zip it in a folder on your local. In the final folder you will find also a PDF document with instructions about how to use the tool.

Key new features in TrueSight Capacity Optimization 11.0 include:

 

 

  • Enhanced support for public cloud - With this version, thanks to the new best-practice view for Amazon Web Services (AWS), you will be able to easily view and manage the capacity of your EC2 instances and EBS volumes. The views provide an overview of available capacity, utilization, trends, and residual capacity in terms of CPU, memory, and datastore utilization for each entity and automatically identify for you Idle EC2 Instances to help you increase efficiency in usage of public cloud resources and save money. Enhanced integration for both AWS and Microsoft Azure has been also included in this version to improve the ability to manage public cloud resources being able to also automatically import related business services details

 

  • Capacity Views Transformation - All capacity views (both out-of-the box views and custom views) are now available on TS Console UI. You will be able to access all your views from your mobile devices such as tablets. Moreover, you gain the ability to create and structure more powerful custom views in the mobile-ready UI with a minimal need of programming skills thanks to the addition of new view pages templates like visual map template and time forecasting template that have been released as part of  the feature pack 1 for TSCO 10.7. In addition to Capacity Pools view and best-practices views for Virtualized Environments, Hadoop, Storage and Network now also Cloud Views, Server Views and DataCenter view are available into the modern and interactive web-based UI which brings you enhanced capacity visibility and improved ability to optimize your infrastructure costs and reduce business risks thus achieving a significantly decrease in time to value

 

  • New web-based Investigate tool - The Investigate tool is now available in the modern, web-based TrueSight console, which you can access from a web browser or a mobile device. With the new simplified workflow of the Investigate tool, you can easily create charts and tables, known as investigate studies, to achieve the following goals:
    • Proactively watch the capacity and performance of your systems
    • View the capacity and performance data in near real-time
    • Perform ad-hoc troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for problems on a specific system

 

  • Support for Kubernetes - A new integration for Kubernetes provides you with the ability to manage your container resources orchestrated via Kubertenes. This integration allows you to extract both performance and configuration data across different components of the Kubernetes system. Also, it allows you to capture relationships and logical dependencies among entities such as clusters, nodes, namespaces, deployments, and pods. Along with the connector, a brand new best-practices view for Kubernetes is provided. Kubernetes view supports the Kubernetes cluster orchestration system, a leading solution to manage cloud-native containerized environments. You can leverage Kubernetes view to address some of most relevant challenges arising in containerized environments, including understanding the residual capacity, identifying bottleneck resources and predicting saturation dates both at the infrastructure level (cluster and nodes) and at the application level (deployments and pods)

 

  • Enhanced support for storage - Improved support for Storage with new integration for high-performance flash storage systems like Dell EMC Unity and Pure Storage and enhanced visiblity into storage capacity with support for Dell EMC Unity and Pure Storage in the best-practices Storage View

Leverage entity catalogs to reconcile systems you are managinng in TrueSight Capacity Optimization and avoid duplicates.

 

Entity catalogs provide an easy way to manage entities imported by each connectors (ETL tasks) in TrueSight Capacity Optimization.

An entity catalog can be shared between different ETL tasks that are importing same entities (e.g. vSphere connector and CMDB connector).

By leveraging Entity Catalogs you will be able to easily reconcile entities imported by multiple ETLs based on different criteria and in an automated fashion to avoid duplicates in your TSCO environment and improve quality of results in your capacity management reports..

Leverage user roles, user accounts, and access groups to effective manage user authorization and role-based access control (RBAC) in TrueSight Capacity Optimization.

 

Depending on user privileges and permissions, each user can access different sections of the console and view different types of information as per his authorization level. The permissions management system in TrueSight Capacity Optimization is based on the concepts of user roles and access groups, in short: role-based access control. You can create as many roles as necessary and grant them to selected user accounts on the basis on their need and responsibilities within your organization.

One of the available options to manage user Authentication to TrueSight Capacity Optimization is the LDAP authentication mode.

 

This option allows the external users (users defined on LDAP servers) to access TrueSight Capacity Optimization. You can configure one or multiple LDAP domains, to authenticate users using different contexts on the same LDAP server or on different servers.

TrueSight Capacity Optimization enables you to bookmark content that you use frequently, or want to be easily accessible for quick reference.

 

In TrueSight Capacity Optimization you can:

  • Bookmark analyses, models, views, reports, systems details, business drivers, reservations, and domains
  • Edit and manage saved bookmarks
  • Easily share bookmarks with other users via email, increasing user collaboration.

When you log on to the BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization console, the Welcome page of the Home tab displays saved bookmarks on the right, under Recent bookmarks. The bookmarks are grouped as Private bookmarks and Public bookmarks. Private bookmarks are based on user login. Public bookmarks are visible to all users.

Being able quickly check progresses in admin tasks, analyses, models and reports and be constantly informed about possible errors or alarms related to the health of the systems while executing additional tasks in the TrueSight Capacity Optimization console is critical to proactively overcome potential issues and preserve availability of the capacity management tool 24X7.

The notification area in TrueSight Capacity Optimization console keeps you proactively notified of alarms and errors and it also allow you, as an administrator, to also check progresses of activities being executed by other users (and kill them in case needed).

Here are the highlights:

Users can quickly create views of their data which appeal to IT leaders and business service owners

  • Create new views easily with expanded choice of out-of-the view templates that matches the needs of the users. A variety of templates are offered to support a majority of user requirements
  • Easily migrate older views to new TrueSight Console for continuous support

Stronger security and more flexible data collection for AWS and Azure infrastructure services

  • Customers now have the flexibility to collect data through resource management API in addition to service management API for Azure.
  • Use proxy services for access to both AWS and Azure services providing additional security

Easily pinpoint the issues in your Hadoop environment with the increased visibility

  • Planners have an aggregated view of all their Hadoop clusters with high-level details for various distributions. They can drill down further in the appropriate place for deeper analysis.

More control over VMware virtual machines that provides more accurate analysis and easier reporting

  • Provide access to a specific list of VMs (Whitelist)
