Ever looked at an armonitor.log and wondered what's going on with it or how can you use it to help you?

Well along with the arerror.log, the armonitor.log is a basic log file of AR Server. It records the activity of the armonitor process providing an audit trail of the Remedy processes.

To go one step back, let's recall what the armonitor process actually does.

The armonitor process is the key process in AR Server. It's the process that gets started when you:

- start the AR System Server process in Windows

- issue the command arsystem -start in UNIX

Once the process starts, it then reads the contents of the armonitor.cfg/conf file and starts the processes listed here as child processes (assuming that they aren't commented out of course). Because it starts these other processes, it is therfore their parent process.

It also stops the processes (when you stop the service or issue the 'arsytem stop' command) and restarts them should these processes die unexpectedly.

Now back to the log, it hasn't changed much in recent years and a typical example of it is as follows:

Sat Feb 22 19:49:50 2014     Starting AR Monitor version 8.1.00 201301251157.

Quite bulky isn't it?

And this is just a snippet of the log, so when faced with the actual log file it can be difficult to read and make any use out of.

What if I told you that you can make this log far easier to read?

What if you could make the entries in the log look like this instead:

It is possible, and once done it can make the armonitor.log far more usable when troubleshooting a problem.

To achieve this I make use of the macro feature within a text editor called TextPad. I created a series of macros which I run in a specific order to clean up the armonitor.log

These macros are:

NameDescriptionMacro Actions
ARNOTE 0Removes all lines containing the string 'ARNOTE 0'

F5 key

Search for the string ARNOTE 0

Mark All

Edit

Cut Other

Bookmarked lines

Stop recording

Default play mode: Play Once

armonitor_clean(Windows) Puts the process path on the same line as the timestamp and PID

Place cursor on start line

Home key

F5 key

Search for the character "

Find Next

Left key (cursor back to the point before the ")

Backspace (to bring the line back up one line)

Space key

End key

Down key (bring cursor down to the next line)

Delete key

Stop recording

Default play mode: Repeat to end of file

armonitor_clean_UX(UNIX) Puts the process path on the same line as the timestamp and PID

Place cursor on start line

Home key

F5 key

Search for the string ./

Find Next

Left key (cursor back to the point before the ./)

Backspace (to bring the line back up one line)

Space key

End key

Down key (bring cursor down to the next line)

Stop recording

Default play mode: Repeat to end of file

Current ARMonitor childRemoves the lines containing 'Current ARMonitor child process'

F5 key

Search for the string Current ARMonitor child process

Mark All

Default play mode: Play Once

Delete Blank LinesRemoves all unnecessary blank lines from the log

Check the Regular Expression checkbox

Search for ^\s*$

Uncheck Regular Expression

You can call them whatever you want, but I went for descriptive names so that I can recall what each does when viewing them in TextPad.

Macros in TextPad.png

To begin recording a Macro within TextPad, go to the Macros menu and select Record.

NOTE: Ensure that when searching for strings (highlighted in bold), you don't have the regular expression checkbox selected unless explicitly stated in the Macro Actions.

Once created, to achieve the results in the second log snippet, I ran them in the order they appear in the table.

You can of course create another macro to run all of these in order, or even include all the above actions into a single macro to clean up the armonitor.log in one fell swoop if you want.

Moving forward it would be beneficial if this log was written in a similar way to the outcome above upon creation, so that there would be no need to run macros against it.

An idea was raised for this, and I can gladly say that this has been worked on and could be introduced into a future AR Server codeline quite soon.

EDIT: This is now in the product as of 8.1.02
