Hello friends, if your favorite browser is Chrome, just like me, you might have hit a roadblock while trying to insert images and hyperlinks on your post.

So your screen would look like this

Leaving you with the only option of editing the html to get ahead or change your browser.

The workaround

Surprisingly simple to get around this problem. Check your Zoom level from your browser settings (Wrench icon beside your address bar)

It might be set to 110% > Set the Zoom level to 100%

The browser blinks to the new level and everything works just fine.

This bug stands corrected with the latest version of Chrome 'Canary'.

Hope that helps you steer clear of the Image insert challenge And keeping your favorite browser.

Ran into an issue you can't figure out yourself? You may not be the only one facing it. Let us unleash the potential of the Community to go hunting.

First, Delve into what has already been offered.

Choose the right forum

If used effectively, Communities could be your 24hr Knowledge center, and Conversations are most effective when started in the right areas, notifying the right people.

Own the thread

When you post a Question, it is like opening a Service request which you will own through it's lifecycle.

As experts look into your query, more and more data will be exchanged, analysis, details offered. Make sure you provide the necessary details, screenshots, logs, or even reminders, anything needed to make your case easily understood. Your enthusiasm to follow through will breed energy around the thread. more-like-this.png

Continue to research

Maybe a direct clue or a piece of the puzzle is lying in similar Discussions and documents created in the forums. Infact you would be the best person pursuing your own cause, sometimes even before you get to be fully understood by others. See for eg. this discussion on a Ubuntu Server instance which ultimately, as it turned out, got self answered by the requestor. Check out the More Like This widget along every team-Germany-rowing.pngthread which provide you similar discussions supplementing your quest.

Foster teamwork

Appreciating and acknowledging a Correct or helpful answer not only encourages people on the thread but also helps all users like you by highlighting the right solution.

There could also be an opportunity to make new friends in the process, a great note to Close your case with.

As we'd all agree, whatever may be the business, at the end of the day, it always runs on positive relationships

It happens to all of us, the Oops moments, spotting a typo here, something that could be simpler, better expressed... we all go in there and make small edits to our Blog, Discussion or Document we just published.thumbs-up.png

Publishing your post

When we Publish our post it notifies users:

Editing your post once Publishedminor-edit.png

While this is a great Announcement feature, what we don't want is our subsequent edits being broadcast to the crowd! That's why the editor gives you the option to reserve notifying everyone with your change activities simply by checking the 'Don't send notifications' box before you publish your latest version.

So next time, just before you confirmed your post, you may just consider this small step to a clean and efficient Community

search-automation.pngSearch First

Got a question about BMC technology, products, offerings, Communities? We always start with the "Search the BMC Communities" field under the main site navigation menu.

As you start keying in your term character by character, the system starts suggesting you results right underneath your search field even before you've clicked on anything! For e.g., I would copy+paste technical terms you might ask in Discussions to see what product/ forum is it all about.

The auto predict list might take a while to build so please give it a couple of seconds after you've typed your query term. I even do this, backspace out a letter or two from my search keyword, just to wake up the system a bit

Get more from your Search under the 3 main buckets of:

1. Content

Obviously the first set of results of your search is all the Content that is associated directly with your Search term. Be it in the title, body, keywords or even in the name of an attachment all the Discussions, Documents, Status upgrades, Blog posts, Ideas, etc, are listed under Content.

2. People

This is where the Search is really interesting. It not only suggests you all Content Types, but names of Communities users who have identified themselves with your technology/industry keyword, eg may be in their  Description or Certification details on their profile.

You may want to network with some of these guys to be updated on activities around your topics of interest.

3. Places

The right Communities are presented to you so that you can restrict your Search to these places, get more ideas of Search keywords, or even go to thse Communities and check out the availabe Content offered and interact with some real users and experts. And as always, you have a way of following these spaces of interest.

So next time you are thinking where to start, just start by Searching on BMC C and see the information that is already available in the public.

Do you know, that by interacting publicly on BMC Communities, you enable people all over the web find answers? newbonfire.png

See for example how someone searching on 'Optimize IT' on Google is suggested resources from leading the person right over to Communities.

Open searches by customers, prospects or someone who don't have an account on BMC Communities, or even never heard of BMC, can benifit from your activity!

Tip: Better search works through proper tagging.

I want to thank all of you for engaging,  the buzz you create not only lights up your Product/Industry forum, User group... but the heat is carried a much larger Community across the www

We've seen earlier that User Groups are great to collaborate and Local User Groups are the blood of the Community. It is where you get to F2F with people in your area and share stuff that is in common. We thought of making it even more accessible for you.UG-top-nav-Cust-prog-transp.png

Right from the new global header in Communities, you can:

  1. Click at the label itself to get a listing of all the different Groups on Communities, not even having to wait for the sub menu to drop down, or
  2. Mouse over and click for the geo specific User groups from the drop down.
  3. Click on the second item - Customer Programs if you are a Customer/ BMC Partner.

So what are you waiting for? Find out about meet ups happening in your area and get yourself invited

If you do not find a Usergroup in your area and would want to put together one? Let us know right here by Commenting on this blog and we'll help you get started.

Let's look at some of the ways you can derive value from Communities without having to spend huge amounts of time.

I'll try to share a process where you can progressively save your time and efforts required to zoom in on your food.

1. Search on your keywords

Let's start with the conventional search, a great way to get foccussed directly on important stuff. We have seen how the Search on BMC Communities is now greatly improved by content tagging.

For eg, if your prime interest is "Remedy and SRM", a search on the terms would be our step 1.

2. Get the RSS Feed of your Searchrestaurant-service.png

Once you've already searched on a given topic, you can Save the RSS feed of this Search. When you Subscribe to this feed you can access it anytime from your browser favorites or can read it from your preferred RSS feed reader like iGoogle or netvibes.

3. Be notified about Feed activity

I know even checking the RSS feed is a reactive way of keeping up with things. Well how can we reduce our time-to-hunt further?

With cool Social tools like (Yes "spelt like a 'Lift' without the L" you can design your response mechanism to fire you an email, for e.g. or have your send a Tweet from your Twitter account, whenever there is a new item on your Search feed, which means on any new activity on topics of your interest.

Now is that some fine dining experience?

Hello friends!

hope you have been enjoying our new Ideation capability we launched earlier this month?

While it is cool to create new Ideas and see great thoughts from friends, it is important to tag them. The same rules of search and findability apply for Ideas as it does for blog posts, Discussions and Documents. To get the needed lift on an idea you are really looking to harness the masses and that is by enabling quick and easy search from anywhere on Communities.

Let us look at a good example of using tags by Jason on Mobility for BMC Communities.

The result: It is also searcheable as a resource around 'Social'. So that one is taking off right now.

Like the idea? You can Vote it Up and we can look to make progress on it.

Have a thought or an idea? Create one here and remember to put in your tags.
