"Be bold. Well-calculated risks will pay off nicely," is the advice Israel Gat, vice president of R&D for infrastructure management at BMC Software, Inc., leaves with listeners at the end of this interview. And from this interview, you'll know that Israel's a man who follows his own advice: After joining BMC Software, he and his development team embarked on a project to bring robust, new functionality to BMC's market-leading IT operations management solutions. And they did so utilizing the new "agile development" technique for software development, which, according to Israel, "caught on [here] like a fire."

BMC Software has long provided market-leading solutions for today's (very) distributed enterprise. Now, it's enhanced these solutions with even richer functionality and integration, closely tied in with BMC's configuration management database. In this interview, Israel discusses the process that led to developing these solutions, and the agile development techniques he and his team employed. He also relates how customer demand led to developing "hybrid" solutions that can utilize agentless or agent-based technologies, and he expresses his goals for moving BMC continuously forward in the operations management arena of IT.
