Is CMDB required for SIM?

I'm in a situation where I do not have access to a CMDB and I need to get SIM up and running. Is this possible? If so, can you plese give me a little direction?

I'm looking over the 7.2 documentation.  In the early part of the documentation, there is a chart stating: "How service model objects get to a SIM cell". CMDB is mentioned, but so are two other options that interest me: "BAROC source file" and "BMC Impact Explorer". From the documentation, I don't see any explanation on how to use anything other than the CMDB. The documentation talks about using BMC Impact Service Model Editor, which require Portal, which from my experience, requires a CMDB.

Hopefully I wasn't too confusing and someone can give some input.

Re: Is CMDB required for SIM?

In version 7.2 under the services tab, you can manually add devices and services. You can create new devices and services under the edit menu --> Create Component.

Then from there you can add the items to the service map by drag and drop and build your relationships

Re: Is CMDB required for SIM?

Hi Kyle,

Which version do you use?

Starting v.7.1, CMDB is no longer a mandatory to make SIM works. It provides flexible deployment, which you can select what you need in the installation step
Without CMDB requirement, you can still install SIM and then use it (create and maintain the service model)
If you read in the doc (Installation Guide), you should see that there are 3 ways (basic, standard, atrium deployment).

In such case, you should use the simplest way (basic deployment - without Atrium CMDB).
So, you don't need  Portal (standard deployment) neither Service Model Editor (SME (Service Model Editor).
With only BMC Impact Explorer, you can get SIM up and running.

Hopefully, it clears enough

Re: Is CMDB required for SIM?

Building SIM models/views using IX and without the SME and CMDB sounds interesting to me.  This is something we've ever done.

What concerns me is that when our CMDB becomes available (say in 9 months,) is there a migration path to it.  Or, we had to start all over using SME/CMDB.

On a related question, where does SIM models/views get stored when configured without SME and CMDB?

Thanks.

Re: Is CMDB required for SIM?

Hello,

Building models using IX is easy and indeed does not require the CMDB.

Using this mechanism, the SIM model data is stored in the cell repository, as are the events and data that the cell manages.

A migration utility exists (sim2cmdb) to help you migrate models that you created directly in the cell (using IX or using e.g. the command line interface) into the BMC Atrium CMDB.

I hope this helps,

Re: Is CMDB required for SIM?

Hi,

Exists any CLI to add/update/remove CI/relations from model on cell?

What I need to know is if there are any command line to build and mantain the SIM model directly on cell repository. I have a database with the information to build the model and I want to automatically "refresh" the model on SIM.

Thanks in advance

Re: Is CMDB required for SIM?

Is there a manual or documentation that explains the process to create service models using IX using the services tab?

Thanks,

Gib

Re: Is CMDB required for SIM?

You can later on move to CMDB. There is a utility called sim2cmdb which migrate your model from SIM to CMDB.

Answer to your second question is service model will be stored in cell's database called mcdb.

Thanks

Yes, refer to Impact Solutions:  Service monitortoring user guide V 7.2,  chapter 4, editing service model in Impact explorer.

Re: Is CMDB required for SIM?

There are two ways to use cli and send models (CI & relationships) to cell. You can either directly use pposter cli command, which sends model via publishing server or mposter cli command, which uses direct baroc file mechanism to send data to cell.  refer to Service model adminsitartor's guide for more details.

Re: Is CMDB required for SIM?

Hi,

The attached powerpoint summarizes all the options to "get your model into the cell". It was written for 7.1, but remains valid for later versions.

This is no replacement for documentation, but this should help you get started.
