Hi team,

Our document for Supported Platforms and System Requirements list versions and suggested updates in the format below.

Does this mean that all updates from AS 3.0 update 5 to AS 4.0 Update 2 are supported?

Is is possible to get a definitive list of all versions and their supported updates for the Unix products?

In addition...the SuSE lists are different...can these be standardized?

How to achieve multi-tenancy with marimba?

I can't be the first person to ask this question, but I don't see anybody discussing it on any of these forums.

The issue is that my customer has multi-tenancy implemented in their ITSM environment, but marimba doesn't really support it. By support, I'm really only looking for the minimum at this point: just a company name on the CI when it gets imported to the CMDB.

We've discussed a few scenarios, but the leading one seems to be to set up the data exchange to extract it from the domain name via SQL statements. For example, if the domain name is bmc.com or uk-bmc.com, then company name is BMC Software. This could also be done via workflow on the CMDB side (a filter on new CIs). We'll need this workflow anyway so we can populate the CMDB Row Level Security attribute.

Has anybody else handled this issue? If so, how did you do it?

When are endpoint inventory scans sent back to transmitter?

Hi all,

I've got a few questions regarding inventory scans that I can't seem to find the answer for in the product documentation (it's probably in there somewhere, but I'm a man and can't find anything - so my girlfreind tells me, anyway).

Basically, I would like to know when an endpoint inventory scan is actually sent back to the transmitter if the endpoint was not connected to the network or switched on when it was scheduled to run the scan?

I know that if the endpoint is switched on but not connected to the network at the scheduled time that the scan will still run using it's last known configuration. But I'm not entirely sure when it actually transmits the data. Does it do it as soon as it detects a network connection, or does it wait until its next scheduled scan?

If the latter is true, then I assume that for any machine that is never connected to the network at the scheduled time, we would never get an inventory scan. Is this correct?

Final question. If a machine is off at the time it is scheduled to perform an inventory scan, will it do it as soon as it boots up?

We are currently running Marimba 6, but looking to upgrade shortly.

Inventory Scanner Extension Channel

Can someone make me one?

For all my scripting and work on BMC CM, I am not a Java Programmer and some of it is a bit over my head and I don't have the time to learn a new language at this point in time.

I need a channel to scan for any .ws file in a folder that may be anywhere on any hard drive and report the name of the file in the software inventory.

So, if there exists a file named m0123456.ws in c:\program files\pcomm\private - I want m0123456.ws to show in the software listing as viewed using the CM Console. AND, if there is a file named thissys.ws in d:\pcomm\public - I want thissys.ws to show in the software listing.

It would be wonderful if it could use a editable file that could be edited to add more files to look for in case of future need.

Oh, if only the Application Dictionary took wildcards :

<inv:entry path="*\private" file="*.ws"
product="" manufacturer="IBM"
version="" description="Host Session ID" />

( displayed product name would be the file name, yes? I know version="" pulls the file version info. )

Didn't there use to be a File Scanner channel in the FSRK?

Package Compression

Hi team,

I have a customer who is asking if BMC Application Packager does any compression. They inform me that both Wise and Prism compress the payload by about 50% while BMC does not appear to. They are concerned with both disc space on their master TX as well as the repeaters they replicate these channels to. Are there any plans in the roadmap to compress our application packages?

I informed them that we compress the channel during distribution but it is my understanding that when the payload arrives at the repeater, it takes up that same space as the original on the master. Does anyone know if we are planning on keeping the compressed size of the package on the repeater (roadmap?)

Software Usage on Linux

Hi Team,

I have a customer who is seeing the CPU spike up to 90%+ when trying to use software usage. They have a need to be able to harvest licenses on applications that are not used as well as using the data from SU to determine who to target for communications regarding software that they are actively using.

They were informed by support that they should not turn on Software Usage on Linux as this is normal behavior.

Can anyone explain why the Linux tuners cause the CPU issues and suggest any work around solution that other folks have used that have mixed Windows/Linux enviroments.

Memory on Linux Tuner

Hi team,

A customer has reported that their Linux systems reserve 300MB of memory even when that are at rest. Their customer base are (right or wrong) convinced that when their systems are slow, the culprit is the tuner and have either removed or disabled it.

Can anyone explain why the Linux tuner seems to reserve this amount of memory and or explain why this is or is not a problem.

How to configure InventoryService Plug-in

Following scenario:

1 Master Tx and 1 Mirror Tx and the endpoints target to Mirror Tx only.

My questions:

Where does the Inventory Plug-in url on Master Tx point to?
Where does the Inventory Plug-in url on Mirror Tx point to ?
Do I have to configure mirror forward scan reports on Mirror Tx like

marimba.inventory.plugin.dbinsert=false
marimba.inventory.plugin.forwardURL=http://mastertx/:5282/Marimba/Current/InventoryService

Instead of forward scan report would it be better that mirrors can insert reports directly?

Switch Marimba infrastructure to another CMDB

I have two infrastructure (test and pre-production) with Marimba (CDI), ITSM and CMDB.

Is it (easy) possible or to switch the test Marimba to the pre-production CMDB? The reason is to load test data from test invdb into the pre-production cmdb to test all workflows like DSL normaliation, Reconciliation between multiple sources.

Any comments are wellcome.

How get the inventory scan on Windows systems the data exactly?

I've got a problem, that some applications are no detected on Windows XP box. The application is not installed thru Marimba and also not listed in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppPaths". We tried to add the application thru the application dictionary - no success.

The Report Center Admin Guide says:

On Windows, if the endpoint is WMI-enabled, then the scan uses WMI. If the machine is not WMI-enabled, or if the scan does not find the information by using WMI, then this information is obtained by checking the registry, shortcuts in the Start menu, and the application dictionary, if one is defined.

My questions:

Are there any other registry keys, beside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppPaths?
How does the inventory scan read the shortcuts in Start Menu?
